The Sun has discovered that Nxivm cult members held wild parties and seminars on Sir Richard Branson’s private Caribbean island, Necker.

 

Former Nxivm publicist Frank Parlato said: “I was told the reason they staged the seminars on Necker was they hoped to recruit Branson into the organization.”

 

“Branson would have been the biggest score they ever had — a billionaire businessman.”

 

Several group members, including co-founder Nancy Salzman, visited Necker for two seminars in 2007 and 2010. The cult’s leader, Keith Raniere, did not attend either trip.

 

At least one of the visits is said to have been paid for by billionaire heiress and Nxivm follower Sara Bronfman, whose late father, businessman Edgar Bronfman Sr., knew Branson.

 

Sara and her sister Clare are committed followers of Nxivm, but there is no suggestion that any of the Bronfman family are involved in or aware of criminal activities by Raniere or his followers.

Parlato said: “In 2007, Nancy Salzman came back from the Necker seminar and she told me Richard Branson was there.”

 

“Nancy said she did the teaching by day. But she said he became increasingly restless and hosted really crazy parties that started earlier and earlier.”

 

“The classes started at 7 a.m. and were supposed to run to 9 p.m. or 10 p.m., but everyone was up late at night and no one wanted to show up on time.”

 

The tycoon maintains he was not aware of any seminars — believing instead it was a booking for Sara Bronfman’s friends and family only.

 

A Virgin Management spokesman said: “Sir Richard Branson has never heard of Keith Raniere, he has never met him and there is absolutely no association between Sir Richard and the Nxivm group or its leader.”

Facebook Inc on Tuesday released a rule book for the types of posts it allows on its social network, giving far more detail than ever before on what is permitted on subjects ranging from drug use and sex work to bullying, hate speech and inciting violence.

Facebook for years has had "community standards" for what people can post. But only a relatively brief and general version was publicly available, while it had a far more detailed internal document to decide when individual posts or accounts should be removed.

Now, the company is providing the longer document on its website to clear up confusion and be more open about its operations, said Monika Bickert, Facebook's vice president of product policy and counter-terrorism.

"You should, when you come to Facebook, understand where we draw these lines and what's OK and what's not OK," Bickert told reporters in a briefing at Facebook's headquarters.

Facebook has faced fierce criticism from governments and rights groups in many countries for failing to do enough to stem hate speech and prevent the service from being used to promote terrorism, stir sectarian violence and broadcast acts including murder and suicide.

At the same time, the company has also been accused of doing the bidding of repressive regimes by aggressively removing content that crosses governments and providing too little information on why certain posts and accounts are removed.

New policies will, for the first time, allow people to appeal a decision to take down an individual piece of content. Previously, only the removal of accounts, Groups and Pages could be appealed.

Facebook is also beginning to provide the specific reason why content is being taken down for a wider variety of situations.

Facebook, the world's largest social network, has become a dominant source of information in many countries around the world. It uses both automated software and an army of moderators that now numbers 7,500 to take down text, pictures and videos that violate its rules. Under pressure from several governments, it has been beefing up its moderator ranks since last year.

Mack is now seeking to cut a deal with prosecutors, and that she also sought to increase Nxivm’s star power by reaching out to Emma Watson and Kelly Clarkson on Twitter with the intention of getting them to join the group.

In 2013, she tweeted to Clarkson, “I heard through the grapevine that you’re a fan of Smallville. I’m a fan of yours as well! I’d love to chat sometime,” she wrote to the pop superstar in 2013.
