Initiative to split California into 3 states may be on November ballot

Silicon Valley venture capitalist Tim Draper introduced a ballot initiative that would split California into three states.

The plan proposes a central state made up of Los Angeles, Ventura, Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, Monterey and San Benito counties; a southern state consisting of Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, Imperial, Kern, Kings, Fresno, Tulare, Inyo, Madera and Mono counties; and the remaining 40 counties would be part of a northern state. Critics opposing the initiative argue that splitting California would triple the State’s challenges and not solve them.

The initiative, called “CAL 3” has more than 600,000 signatures, enough to qualify for the November ballot and will be submitted to election officials next week. Splitting California into three states would require congressional approval.

Trey Gowdy gets surprise document dump on Scott Pruitt's secure phone booth

House Oversight and Government Reform Chairman Trey Gowdy received a document dump from top Senate and House Democrats Monday, urging the South Carolina Republican to go deeper in his investigation of Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt for abuses of power.

“These new documents raise serious questions about EPA’s security expenditures,” the Democrats told Gowdy in a letter focused on Pruitt’s $43,000 secure phone booth.

“In our view, the documents provided to us may constitute evidence of a ‘violation of law, rule, regulation, gross mismanagement, a gross waste of funds, an abuse of authority, or a substantial and specific danger to public health or safety,’" the Democrats wrote, citing federal rules governing personnel management and proper administrative procedure.

Bryon Hefner, the husband of Senator Stanley C. Rosenberg, is to be arraigned on multiple charges of sexual assault, criminal lewdness, and distributing nude photographs without consent Tuesday morning.

Hefner, 30, was indicted by a statewide grand jury on March 29, on 10 felony charges, according to a press release from the offices of Attorney General Maura Healey and Suffolk District Attorney Dan Conley.
