EU will never bite the hand that feeds. EU is totally dependent on natural gas and oil supplied via pipeline from Russia. Syria is the last geographic hurdle to oil moving up from the Persian Gulf. Assad is backed by Russia. Russia is dependent on the sale of energy resources to the EU for its national revenue. If western powers can create regime change in Syria they will create turmoil in Russia economically, sever EU energy dependence from Russia, and ultimately the EU will be able to militarily confront Russia down the road.
