They used it to analyze transcript expression, which is the expression of a specific transcript.

 

A transcript is basically different versions of a gene in a different individual. In plain English, they used the tissue to see how the vaccine would affect different individuals.

 

There is no evidence nor need for the genes themselves to be in there, since it was only needed during analysis.
