Bipartisan Resolution to End War in Yemen Will Be Introduced in the House

President Trump vetoed similar legislation in 2019

Rep. Peter DeFazio (D-OR) is expected to introduce a resolution in the House on Thursday that calls for an end to US involvement in the war in Yemen. Rep. Andy Biggs (R-AZ) is expected to co-sponsor the legislation, making the bill a bipartisan rebuke to the war, similar to a resolution President Trump vetoed in 2019.

In a draft of the bill obtained by Antiwar.com, the legislation invokes the 1973 War Powers Resolution and calls for the president “to remove United States Armed Forces from unauthorized hostilities in the Republic of Yemen.”

Since 2015, the US has supported Saudi Arabia and its allies in a war against Yemen’s Houthis. While US troops are not fighting on the ground against the Houthis, the support the US military gives the coalition is covered under the War Powers Resolution.

Section 8(c) of the War Powers Resolution defines the introduction of US Armed Forces to include “the assignment of members of such armed forces to command, coordinate, participate in the movement of, or accompany the regular or irregular military forces of any foreign country or government when such military forces are engaged, or there exists an imminent threat that such forces will become engaged, in hostilities.”

The bill says that the “activities that the United States has conducted in support of the Saudi-led coalition fall within” the above definition. US support for the coalition includes things like training, providing spare parts for airplanes, logistical assistance, and intelligence sharing. Experts agree, if the US cuts off support for the coalition, the war in Yemen would quickly come to an end.

While President Trump vetoed previous efforts the end the war in Yemen, including bills banning arms sales to Saudi Arabia, the incoming administration could support the measure. Joe Biden has said that his administration will end support for the Saudi’s war in Yemen.

The US-backed Saudi-led war on Yemen has had a devastating impact on the civilian population. Since 2015, airstrikes have hit farms, fishing boats, market places, hospitals, schools, and water treatment facilities. Despite the pattern of indiscriminate bombing, the US continues to support the war. Conditions on the ground caused by the war have led to widespread disease, malnutrition, food shortages, and mass starvation.

PUTIN: Pashinyan Refused Deployment of Russian Peacekeepers Weeks Before The Fall of Shushi

MOSCOW – On November 17, Russian President Vladimir Putin held press-conference answering questions about the situation in Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) and the Azeri-Armenian negotiations. Putin provided a great insight into the diplomatic background of the war and the posture of the pro-Western government of Armenia, led by Soros-backed Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

The Russian president stated that the most important achievement was to stop the bloodshed.

“I have already said that according to official figures alone, over 4,000 people have died. I think that in reality the figures are higher. Tens of thousands are wounded and mutilated. Look, this is not a movie. This is a tragedy that has befallen real people, real families. Therefore, stopping the bloodshed is the main result.

However, to understand what is happening we will still have to go back into history, literally in a few words. I have to recall that it all started in the already remote year of 1988, when ethnic clashes took place in the Azerbaijani city of Sumgayit. Armenian civilians fell victim to these events, and later it spread to Nagorno-Karabakh.

And since the Soviet Union’s leaders did not react duly to these events… let me say it again: these are sensitive issues, and I do not want to side with anyone or decide who was right or wrong. It is no longer possible to determine this now, but it was necessary to put things in order and protect civilians, and this was not done. At that point, the Armenians themselves took up arms, and this protracted conflict, a conflict building for many years, broke out. Eventually, it led to a declaration of independence, sovereignty and self-reliance by Karabakh in 1991. The Bishkek agreements were signed in 1994 and this Bishkek memorandum stopped the hostilities at that time.

What happened as a result? Karabakh declared independence, as I have said, and another seven adjacent regions came under the control of the Armenians, that is, Armenia.

This is basically what we inherited from the past and this is the problem we had to resolve.

I believe the fact that hostilities have stopped and, importantly, the parties agreed to unblock the roads and to restore economic ties is critically important and creates a good basis for normalising relations for the long term,” Putin said.

Putin also revealed that the war could’ve been stopped weeks ago (in October, before the full collapse of the Armenian defense in the south of Artsakh and the fall of the key stronghold of Sushi), but Pashinyan was refusing to accept Russian peacekeepers in the region and allow displaced Azerbaijani people to return to the region, including Sushi.

Republican senators: Allow West Bank goods to be labeled 'Made in Israel'

"This decision would be yet another achievement by your administration that would support Israel and would push back against antisemitism and the BDS movement.”

WASHINGTON - A group of four Senate Republicans sent a letter to US President Donald Trump on Monday, urging him to change US customs policy and guidelines “to allow Israeli goods produced in Judea and Samaria to be labeled 'Made in Israel.'”

AXIOS first reported the story. A copy of the letter was obtained by The Jerusalem Post. “Unfortunately, the United Nations and some prominent members of the Democratic Party are working to oppose Israel and to support the antisemitic Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement, which seeks to isolate and damage Israel economically,” the letter reads. The Senators who signed the letter are Marco Rubio, Tom Cotton, Ted Cruz, and Kelly Loeffler.

The four noted in their letter that the country-of-origin labeling guidelines which was introduced by the Clinton administration in 1995, changed longstanding US policy “to require 'Made in West Bank' labels to be put on Israeli goods produced in Judea and Samaria, even though the US government treats these products as 'articles of Israel'' for trade purposes.”

They added that while US authorities do not enforce this labeling policy, they are “concerned that a future administration could choose to enforce these rules and thereby differentiate Israeli goods produced in Judea and Samaria, making them prime targets for BDS boycotts.”

“Your administration should continue its string of pro-Israel policy changes by undoing these misguided Clinton-era guidelines, thereby allowing Israeli goods produced in Judea and Samaria to be labeled as 'Made in Israel,'” the Senators continued. “This decision would be yet another achievement by your administration that would support Israel and would push back against antisemitism and the BDS movement.”

Far Deadlier Strain Of Coronavirus Discovered In South Australia

As researchers struggle to understand what makes infection with COVID-19 so mild in some cases, and so deadly in others, we have kept a close eye out for any new links between symptoms different strains of the virus. And on Wednesday we noticed new comments from South Australia's top health official who warned that a particularly deadly strain of SARS-CoV-2 is circulating in the state.

Chief Health Officer Professor Nicola Spurrier explained that the reason for the recently imposed six-day lockdown is the fact that "this particular strain has had certain characteristics" she said.

The State of South Australia, which became home to this dramatic scene yesterday, is also bracing for the risk that this new strain could spread more quickly, in addition to being more deadly. Professor Spurrier said a typical generation, or stage, of the virus was only about three days.

"We also know, because of that characteristic, that what we call a generation, is only about three days and a generation is when one case is passing it on to the next level, and then that (next) level, so if they pass it on to two people, they will pass it on to another lot of people, and that is your third generation," she said.

Already, the virus has progressed to the fifth generation, she said.

"At the moment in SA we have done contact tracing to the fourth generation but the fifth generation is out there in our community and at the moment we are contact tracing to get on to that generation and that is the Woodville pizza bar."

Authorities have traced the local outbreak to a pizza shop in Parafield. The cluster began with a worker at Peppers Warmouth, which is being used as a quarantine hotel, was infected with the virus.

By tracing the spread of certain strains of the virus, researchers in the US have hypothesized that the virus was spread to New York from Europe, before moving to the rest of the country east of the Mississippi, while other strains colonized China and the west.

Though SA's infection rate remains muted, officials have reported two new cases today, taking the total to 22, while another 12 people are still under investigation.

But as residents rush to get tested, we can't help but wonder if public health officials might be playing up the strain angle to coax people into obeying the state's six day lockdown.

Mexican Government Threatened to Expel US Agents Over Arrest of Ex-Defence Chief - Reports

The reason the United States dropped charges against Mexico's former defence secretary is because the country's government threatened to expel US federal drug enforcement agents, The New York Times reported.

Earlier in the day, US Attorney General William Barr in a statement issued jointly with his Mexican counterpart Alejandro Gertz Manero, said the United States dismissed drug charges against national defence secretary Salvador Cienfuegos Zepeda so that he may be investigated and charged under Mexican law.

The Justice Department said it arrested the official in October on charges of conspiracy to distribute narcotics and money laundering.

After the arrest, high ranking Mexican officials were furious for being blindsided by one of their closest allies, the report said on Wednesday, citing two people familiar with the matter. The officials were outraged US law enforcement kept Mexico unaware of the investigation of such an important figure, the report added.

The Washington Post called the dropping of the charges an "extraordinary" decision in one of the highest-profile drug-trafficking cases in decades after a long-term, top-secret US investigation that allegedly revealed the official's ties to Mexico’s criminal underworld.

GA Secretary of State Raffensperger: Biden Will Win Georgia; Trump Hurt Chances Telling People Not to Vote Absentee

Wednesday on CNN’s “The Lead,” Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger dismissed allegations of voter fraud in Georgia in the presidential election earlier this month.

He acknowledged the possibility of clerical errors but said he did not anticipate a change in the outcome.

“We have not seen any widespread voter fraud,” he said.“The president has picked up some votes in a few of the counties that made some clerical errors. It wasn’t the machines. But at the end of the day, he started with 14,000. He’s about 12,000 now. But we’re finishing up, waiting for a few more counties to get back to us, large counties, but I don’t believe at the end of the day it will change the total results.”

He told CNN’s Jake Tapper he sees the outcome will be still in Joe Biden’s favor for his state of Georgia when asked.

“Yes, I believe that’s the way it will turn out,” Raffensperger answered.

Raffensperger declined to address Sen. Kelly Loeffler’s (R-GA) repeated calls for his resignation. He also suggested President Donald Trump hurt his chances by discouraging absentee voting.

“I’ve been a lifelong Republican,” he said. “I’m a conservative Christian Republican. And you look at my voting record. I have been endorsed by pro-life business, pro-business groups, National Federation of Independent Businesses. I’m a business owner. And so, people say that I’m not Republican — it’s crazy talk. At the end of the day, when people want to create dissension among the Republican Party in the runoff race, it’s not helpful to the person, the candidate. So I’m not going to comment further. But I know at the end of the day, election matters, and it matters in this office. I’m going to make sure to count every legal, lawful vote, and we’re not going to count any illegal votes.”

“Everything I have done in this office, we outlaw ballot harvesting,” Raffensperger added. “We understand it’s a bad deal to do ballot harvesting. We outlawed it. That was me. That was my team. We now have an online absentee ballot portal which has photo ID. And that was our team that stood that up in less than two weeks when we had this huge expansion of absentee ballots. So, my record will stand on itself. We’ve done a great job. We’ve defeated the issue of having long lines in Georgia. On Election Day, there was a two-minute average wait time. The race is a lot closer than we thought, but that goes back to the candidate for president who told people not to vote absentee. So, 24,000 Republicans that actually voted absentee in the June primary did not come out in the fall and vote. They did not vote absentee nor in early voting or the day of the election, 24,000, and that’s the winning margin to make there.”

‘No Vaccine Against Climate Change’: Red Cross Report Moves to Refocus Attention From Coronavirus

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) has released a report insisting climate change is a bigger danger to humanity than the current Wuhan coronavirus pandemic.

IFRC Secretary-General Jagan Chapagain held a press conference this week saying, “Of course, the [coronavirus] is there, it affects our families, our friends, our parents and (…) this is a very, very serious crisis that the world is currently facing.”

He went on to add, “in our view, climate change will have a greater medium- and long-term impact on human life and the Earth,” Paris Match reports.

Since the start of the Wuhan coronavirus outbreak, around 1.32 million people have died of the virus or of complications caused by it.

“If we are lucky, we will have a vaccine against Covid next year and hopefully in a few years we should be able to manage the impact of Covid-19,” Chapagain said but claimed there was “no vaccine against climate change.”

In the past decade, by comparison, Paris Match states that extreme weather and natural disasters thought to be linked to climate change have led to the deaths of 410,000 people or an average of 41,000 per year over ten years.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), from November 10th to the 16th, there were over 50,000 deaths from the Wuhan coronavirus globally.

The IFRC has called for at least 50 billion dollars to be set aside to meet the adaption needs of 50 developing countries saying, “his amount is paltry in light of the global response to the economic impact of the pandemic.”

The Red Cross statement comes just months after researchers at the Australian National University (ANU) suggested that climate change be listed as a cause of death on death certificates, arguing that deaths from climate change maybe 50 times larger than currently thought.

In August, the Vatican released a document comparing climate change and the coronavirus pandemic saying the virus was, “a harbinger of future crises relating to climate change and the assault on biodiversity.”
