This is major in Texas. This is why Tx kids are coming out of school dumb as a rock. The STAAR literally all that is now taught. Kids cant tell time, cant count money, cant write in cursive, can barely read, etc etc because the state literally tells the teacher what they can teach - which is the content of the STAAR - and gives them a time frame, down to number of minutes each day, to teach it. TEA was very clever in making it an assessment of the teacher, tied to funding. So the kid takes the test, which measures the teaching ability of the teacher, which determines school funding. Talk about pressure on kids. I've known elementary kids to vomit the night before the test because of the pressure put on them by the school. Getting rid of the STAAR permanently would be HUGE.

TEA, you evil scrap of all that is wrong with humanity.

Nearly 70 Texas lawmakers calling on TEA to cancel STAAR test

If granted, this would mark the second year in a row that the STAAR test was not administered.

The standardized test is issued to students 3rd through 12th grade every spring. STAAR serves as an assessment tool for kids and an accountability system for teachers and their districts.

Students who fail the STAAR test could be held back if they’re in 5th or 8th grade. For high schoolers, the stakes are even higher.

"In high school, if you fail the STAAR test, it’s detrimental. You won’t graduate," said Michelle Williams, a teacher at Kashmere High School.
