The Combat Outpost Surveillance and Force Protection System, nicknamed “Kraken” after the mythological sea monster because of its many tentacle-like technological extensions, is the latest. Combining tower-mounted cameras, radar, sonic shot-detection and remote-controlled guns and deployable in a single shipping container, the first operational Kraken was recently installed at Forward Operation Base Pashmul South in Zari district, near Kandahar in southern Afghanistan.

U.S. SSGN-21 Kraken class Cruise Missile Submarine:

(Though called Kraken on this research site, this sub does not go by that name publicly on Navy site. Not sure but wanted to post because of the Special Ops Capability of this sub and the reorg via ADS Chris Miller and Special Ops.)

In addition to carrying over one hundred cruise missiles, these submarines have four torpedo tubes in the bow section with twenty-four torpedoes normally carried. Additional missiles and mines can also be carried but are rarely. More often, rocket propelled torpedoes might be carried although only a handful are usually carried. These boats have a single retractable laser turret in front of the sail. Originally the laser was developed for the Tigershark class. For additional protection against torpedoes, the cruise missile submarine both carries both noise makers and special decoys.

Guided Missile Submarines - SSGN

The SSGNs have the capacity to host up to 66 SOF personnel at a time. Additional berthing was installed in the missile compartment to accommodate the added personnel, and other measures have been taken to extend the amount of time that the SOF forces can spend deployed aboard the SSGNs. The two forward most missile tubes were permanently converted to lock-out chambers that allow clandestine insertion and retrieval of SOF personnel. Each lock-out chamber can also accommodate a Dry Deck Shelter (DDS), enhancing the SSGNs' SOF capabilities.
