The SETI Institute was incorporated today in 1984. Dedicated to the Search for ExtraTerrestrial Intelligence, the Institute uses ground and orbital telescopes to look for signs of alien life. In 2015, the institute discussed whether engaging in Active SETI — the process of transmitting details of Earth into space — was a good idea. Ultimately many members concluded that “worldwide scientific, political and humanitarian discussion must occur before any message is sent” due to the potential existential threat of a hostile alien force.
