To understand the Apocalypse, one needs to have a very deep understanding of the Hebrew/Aramaic scriptures AND the Septuagint - attributes its original addressees possessed. Conjuring supposed referents from 16th century polemic is just as idiotic as any 19th/20th century millenarian cult’s approach to the text. If a reader cannot feel the intertextuality, they will never understand the meaning. It takes arduous work, but it’s the only way to understand this literary-theological masterpiece of Christian inspiration.
