Lesson #5. Character development. Speaking of the characters. Jupiter’s character seems to be the most lacking. She should be this strong female character, but through the entire movie she does not demonstrate any notable assertiveness or strength. She just follows along through everything that is dished to her. If this was supposed to be drama, then yes, it’s ok. But for the sci fi hero flick, no, unacceptable. The only time when she seems to act assertive, is when hitting on this guy:

Heartthrob, isn’t he?

However, the movie has a different explanation for the phrase Jupiter Ascending. Jupiter Jones, in her narration, revealed that she was born when Jupiter was rising, or ascending, “in the house of Leo.” Jupiter rising refers to when Jupiter rises in the east, over the horizon. All planets, the Sun, and Moon, as well as each star, rise in the east once a day (whether we see them or not). When the Sun rises in the east, we call that “morning.” Jupiter rising is a daily occurrence.

Now, “in the house of Leo” is a very strange phrase. The astrological sign Leo is not usually referred to as a “house.” The number of signs (12) does equal the number of houses (12), and there are some similarities between, say, the first house and Aries (the first sign), but astrologers would not usually say that a planet was rising “in the house of Aries”; they would say that a planet was rising “in the sign of Aries” or “in the first house.” So, “in the house of Leo” is a very ambiguous and confusing set of words, though I would suspect that what Jupiter Jones meant was that she was born “in the sign of Leo.”

The idea that Jupiter Jones was born when Jupiter was ascending over the eastern horizon, when Jupiter was also in the sign of Leo, might seem unimportant, until you try to figure out when, in the context of the temporal depiction within the movie, this could have happened in the real, non-movie world. Like all planets, Jupiter (from our Earthly perspective) moves through the zodiac signs in a particular direction, and each planet moves at a different speed. Jupiter spends about a year moving through each zodiac sign, and thus it takes about 12 years for Jupiter to make a complete encircling of the zodiac, from Aries to Pisces. Every 12 years Jupiter is in Leo, and spends about a year there. If one knows roughly what age Jupiter Jones is, then one can figure out in what span of year she was born.
