FIRST FAMILYPublished April 17, 2018

'Dana Perino: For Barbara Bush, loyalty and love went both ways

Dana Perino on passing of Barbara Bush

Host of 'The Daily Briefing' Dana Perino joins 'The Story' to share her personal experience with Barbara Bush while working as White House Press Secretary serving under President George W. Bush.

The first time my husband, Peter McMahon, met Barbara Bush, he was hooked. We were invited to have lunch with President George H. W. Bush and the former First Lady in Houston in 2010. It was a special treat, especially for Peter who had become an American citizen in 2006.

After we ate, the president and I sat talking, well, gossiping really, and Peter and Mrs. Bush walked in the garden outside with their two dogs.

As we said our goodbyes, Peter got in the car and said, “I think I have a new crush.”

“I think she heard you,” I said.

“I don’t care. I want her to know!”

He continued to describe her - she’s charming, smart, hilarious, engaging….a thesaurus couldn’t do Barbara Bush justice.

During the lunch, we’d talked about thank you notes and their importance. Upon returning to Washington, D.C., Peter wrote one but he didn’t have the address. I was traveling for several days, so the letter didn’t get sent for a couple of weeks.

It is a privilege to see their family having fun, no cameras around, making fun of each other and catching up. “We are so very blessed,” Mrs. Bush said. She lived with gratitude, which is one of the lessons she taught that I will try to remember.

The next time we saw her, she said with a smile to Peter, “Well, that was the latest thank you note I ever received.” He was in his fifties, but he reddened with embarrassment. Because Barbara Bush was a woman you didn’t want to disappoint. Of course, she followed that up with a smile and a knowing look. The crush deepened.

As a former staffer for her son’s presidency, Mrs. Bush knew me as someone loyal to him and to her entire family. She seemed to trust me, and that meant the world.

Perhaps that was part of her success as one of America’s beloved First Ladies. Barbara Bush didn’t have to rule with an iron fist - one look of disapproval could melt you. Around her you were on your toes and alert - I learned to come ready with some new bit of information about what was going on in politics and television or with a recommendation on a new book she might like.

In 2011, I invited Mrs. Bush to kick off a Minute Mentoring event in Houston. She said, “Why would you want me? I’ve never worked a day in my life.”

While true that she never earned a paycheck, she worked her tail off for her family, her staff, her country. She donated all of her book proceeds to charity.

In brief remarks before the mentoring session, she said “Earlier today I called George and asked him about working with Dana. And then I called Dana and asked her about working with George. And the advice I can give to you is that listening to the two of them describe working together, that loyalty goes both ways.”

It sure does.

Two summers ago, we visited her and President Bush in Kennebunkport. We were fortunate to be invited for lunch and their children were all there. It is a privilege to see their family having fun, no cameras around, making fun of each other and catching up. Peter helped Mrs. Bush fill her plate and she said, “We are so very blessed.” She lived with gratitude, which is one of the lessons she taught that I will try to remember.

After lunch, we took Jasper to Gooch’s Beach, where dogs are allowed to run off leash after 5 pm. He had a great time, and we were reluctant to leave. As we were packing up the car, a local woman said, “Excuse me, I see you’re not from around here.” She’d noticed our New York license plates.

“No ma’am, we aren’t. But we sure enjoy it.”

“Well, I just wanted to point out to you - do you see that woman over there, with the two little dogs, two men walking behind her? That’s First Lady Barbara Bush. We love her. And I just thought you’d like to know that she walks this beach with her dogs every day.”

“Thank you, ma’am. I know she is very special to you,” I said.

And to us, too.

And now, we are all crushed. Barbara Bush has left us, but everything she gave us remains. We her family, her friends, Americans who loved and admired her even those who just knew her from walking her dogs! – still love her. As she loved this country. With Barbara Bush, that too will always go both ways.

Dana Perino jumps in firestorm, denies accusations she encouraged Dominion sue Trump lawyers for defamation

November 20, 2020 | Frieda Powers

Dana Perino joined the growing list of Fox News hosts taking heat for appearing to cast doubt on claims of election fraud by President Trump’s legal team.

The host of “The Daily Briefing” came to her own defense on social media after she was shredded for allegedly suggesting Dominion Voting Systems could sue the president’s lawyers for defamation after the accusations they leveled at a Thursday press conference.

Sidney Powell, Rudy Giuliani and other members of Trump’s legal team revealed disturbing allegations about the company supplying the machines and software used in several U.S. states for the 2020 election, citing foreign corruption that helped taint the results in favor of Democratic nominee Joe Biden.

Perino followed up on the press conference with a discussion of the stunning revelations with former White House chief of staff Karl Rove, who also seemed to stop just short of dismissing the claims as conspiracy theories.

(Source: Fox News)

Following Rove’s comments, Perino noted that Dominion had denied the allegations in a statement. But in her own comments, Perino interjected additional doubts, stating that the lawyers were “smearing an American company” and questioned if a lawsuit could not be on the horizon.

“They just put out a statement completely denying all of it. And I wouldn’t be surprised if they decided to take some sort of action against this because, as you said, they have had these allegations out there smearing an American company,” Perino said. “Are they going to take it to court? And where would they take that to court?”

Rove reasserted that the allegations need to be proved in court, as if Trump’s lawyers were not aware of the next steps, and suggested Dominion “could claim that these statements were made publicly and hurt their business or some other place.”

Perino was immediately called out on Twitter where users have been excoriating Fox News Channel for its shift in coverage of Trump and his battle over the election outcome.

“Dana Perino is now urging Dominion to sue Sidney Powell and Rudy Giuliani in the latest edition of ‘Watch our Ratings Burn,'” podcaster Matt Couch tweeted.

Trump attorney Lin Wood reacted with a tweet on defamation law and calling Perino “foolish.”

I know defamation law. Defamation law is a friend of mine. Dominion is not going to sue anybody because TRUTH is an absolute defense.

Plus discovery in the case will open the cookie box to even more evidence that Dominion interfered in our US Election. @DanaPerino is foolish. https://t.co/oyiTIHixKz

The anger at Fox News was not only focused on Perino, however, as reporter Kristin Fisher was also slammed for saying much of what Giuliani presented at the press conference Thursday was “simply not true.” Host Tucker Carlson felt the ire of viewers as well after he called on Powell to prove the allegations she had made, and during a segment on “The Five,” Geraldo Rivera slapped down his co-host Jesse Watters who delivered a straightforward assessment of the presser.

Rove was also under fire for his heated reaction to the Trump legal team during his appearance on Perino’s show.

“These are serious and I think, somewhat, strange accusations,” he told the Fox News host, adding that Giuliani and Powell have “an obligation to go to court and prove them.”

— Marc Caputo (@MarcACaputo) November 19, 2020

“They have an obligation to go to court and prove these or the American people will have every reason to question their credibility,” Rove added, echoing the strange criticisms from others who seem to think the press conference was a dumping ground of information and no legal follow-through is planned.

“So, I’m not going to say that they don’t have proof. But they better come up with proof and go to court because these are serious allegations that basically say our election was manipulated by a combination of foreign and domestic actors and stolen,” Rove said. “That cannot be left just simply out there is it needs to be either proved or withdrawn.”

THE MOST INSULTING GESTURE

https://www.cnn.com/2013/02/06/world/meast/shoe-throwing-significance/index.html

Why shoe throwing is 'incredibly offensive'

By Alan Duke, CNN

Updated 5:35 AM ET, Thu February 7, 2013

Shoe hurled at Ahmadinejad in Cairo 02:21

The shoe attack on Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in Egypt, the latest on a politician in the Middle East, causes many in West to ask: Why is throwing a shoe such a big deal?

One of CNN's resident experts is producer Mohammed Tawfeeq, who was in Baghdad when President George W. Bush dodged a flying shoe at news conference in the U.S. Embassy in December 2008.

Journalist Muntadhar al-Zaidi tossed it because he wanted to "humiliate the tyrant," his brother told CNN.

"Yes, I was there," Tawfeeq said. "It was a very big deal in Iraq."

Read more: Iraqi artist inspired by George W Bush shoe thrower

In fact, some Iraqis celebrated that moment, he said.

"Other people were not happy because for them they see it by end of the day like a guest visiting their country," Tawfeeq said. "Traditionally, it was also offensive to insult a guest."

The act of throwing a shoe at someone or showing them your sole is "incredibly offensive" in the Middle East, he said.

"The bottom line is a shoe is dirt," he said. "Throwing a shoe on someone means throwing dirt on that person."

Professor Faegheh Shirazi, with Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Texas, agreed, saying it is offensive "regardless of the religious practices."

"Throwing a shoe or hitting someone with a shoe or showing the bottom of your shoe when sitting with legs up on a chair and facing another person all are culturally unacceptable and are considered to be a grave insult and belittling to a person," Shirazi said.

Another offensive aspect is the significance of the shoe being a sign of wealth.

"Most often, lower-status people and poor men could not wear shoes," Shirazi said. "The feet came in contact with pollution and the dirt on the road. The dirt on the feet indicated the lack of social status, the level of economic class and the level of education and lack of sophistication and intellect."

Tawfeeq, who occasionally visits the United States, was surprised to learn shoe throwing was not considered an offense in North America.

A search of literature reveals references suggesting the power of the shoe is ancient.

For example, in the King James Version of the Old Testament, Psalm 60:8 says: "Moab is my washpot; over Edom will I cast out my shoe: Philistia, triumph thou because of me."

"Perhaps it has to do with the hierarchy of the body position, that is, the relationship between the head and the feet, the head being at the top and not touching the ground and the dirt," Shirazi said. "The head carries a more prestigious status in comparison to the feet, which in older times mostly remained bare."
