Progressive Conservative MPP and federal Conservative candidate Gila Martow is siding with small businesses with the news that more regions around Toronto will be moving into a lockdown on Monday, December 14.
"Small businesses are the lifeblood of our community," reads the note from Martow.
In part, her statement reads:
Since the beginning of this pandemic, I have always advocated to ensure we balance the need to keep people safe with measures that support small businesses.
While I recognize and appreciate the need to limit large gatherings, I stand with Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti’s call for further restrictions on big box retailers while allowing small businesses to remain open.
Big box retailers like Walmart should not be permitted to enrich themselves on the backs of small businesses simply because they can afford to hire well-connected lobbyists like Melissa Lantsman to get them preferential treatment.
Melissa Lantsman and David Tarrant are two former staffers to Ontario premier Doug Ford who have been hired by Walmart as lobbyists.

A Call to Canada’s Police Forces: Defend the Health and Liberty of the People!
As sworn peace officers, you are entrusted to defend us as citizens. You are not obligated to enforce measures that endanger or attack our health or civil rights. But that is exactly what is expected of you now by the handful of bureaucrats who are unlawfully imposing masking, distancing, and mandatory vaccinations on all of us.
The covid virus is no more lethal than a seasonal flu. Even WHO and CDC data shows that there is no global pandemic, despite what the corporate-run media says. And yet we are expected to obey arbitrary orders of unelected “health” officials that strip us of our rights without cause. The covid measures have not been authorized by Parliament or any court of law. For that reason, as police officers you cannot and should not enforce such measures.
In the coming weeks, mandatory vaccinations will be imposed on all of us without our informed consent, which is illegal. We ask and expect you NOT to enforce vaccinations on the people of our community. If you do so, you will be aiding and abetting a crime against all of us and will be liable for prosecution under the law.
We invite you to work with us to uphold the rule of law and the health and inborn liberty of We the People. We ask you to partner with the Sheriffs of our Republic, which is re-establishing democracy and lawful authority in Canada in the face of a corporate tyranny and Rule by Decree. From booming business to barely scraping by: Spa owner continuing to operate defying COVID restrictions.
It may not be business as usual for the rest of the world, but walking up to Boho Beauty Microblading and Spa in Bowmanville, Ontario certainly feels like stepping back in time. The business has zero fear mongering or protocol reminder signage, and the minimalist inspired interior is cozy and welcoming.
Before the coronavirus shutdowns, business was booming for Jessica Downey, owner of Boho Beauty. She was successfully employing multiple women, and empowering others in their business ventures by teaching the entrepreneurial skills she had acquired over the years. With her husband’s business also booming, both were able to provide a stable income for their three children.
Until the government’s response to a virus completely destroyed all of the economic opportunity they had worked for so diligently. Jess lost 700 appointments over the six-month period that her business was shut down — not to mention her employees’ lost income. Speaking out against the restrictions also got Jessica completely deplatformed from all of her social media accounts, devastating the following she had developed on her business pages.
She has been evicted from a newly renovated rental space due to a subsidy dispute with her landlord, has collections harassing her about bills for that same space despite not using it for six months, and is now supposed to be operating her business at an extremely reduced rate with restricted service offerings.
Not comfortable taking government loans with questionable stipulations, Jess and her husband made the difficult decision to sell their family home to help their businesses stay afloat. Her family of five currently lives in a trailer, off the grid.
Jess came to Rebel News as an I Will Open case. While the government hasn’t mandated that she close completely again (at least, not yet), she has decided that enough is enough. Despite technically being in the “red zone” of coronavirus restrictions in Durham region, she is continuing business full steam ahead.
