Here’s a blast from the past!

Back in 2006 when the great Lou Dobbs was at CNN the former news channel ran a segment on Smartmatic voting machines.

According to this CNN report, Smartmatic was based in Hugo Chavez’s Venezuela and was sold to Sequoia. But the top officials for Smartmatic were still in Venezuela. CNN was worried this could interfere with our democracy.

The Treasury Department, which is supposed to be the look into connections between sensitive US infrastructure and foreign interests has failed yet again to protect the American people. Election Data: President Trump’s Anti-Globalism, Pro-Police Message Wins Over Hispanics

President Trump’s message on the 2020 presidential campaign trail — focused on the defense of law enforcement and the working class, and against globalization — resonated massively with the nation’s growing Hispanic American population.

Election data reviewed by Politico reveals that in 78 of the nation’s 100 majority-Hispanic counties across the United States, Trump improved his margins compared to the 2016 presidential election. Trump also improved his margins with Hispanic Americans “in exit polls of each of the top 10 battleground states,” Politico reports.

The improvement, the data indicates, is a result of Trump’s anti-globalism message that resonates with large swaths of working class Hispanic Americans who largely support police officers.

Key focuses of Trump’s campaign this cycle included slamming Democrats for their attacks on police, defending the interests of American workers against foreign competition in the labor market, attacking China for their domination in the world economy and the economic elites who have aided their rise for decades.

But, in interviews with more than a dozen experts on Hispanic voters in six states, no factor was as salient as Trump’s blue-collar appeal for Latinos.

“Most Latinos identify first as working-class Americans, and Trump spoke to that,” said Josh Zaragoza, a top Democratic data specialist in Arizona, adding that Hispanic men in particular “are very entrepreneurial. Their economic language is more aligned with the way Republicans speak: pulling yourself up by your bootstraps, owning your own business.” [Emphasis added]

“Most Latinos in this country are working class,” Enos said. “One would have to assume that this identity of being working class is more important than this identity of being Latino.” [Emphasis added]

Most prominently, the data indicates that many Hispanic Americans were turned off by Democrats’ wide embrace of Black Lives Matter, an anti-police movement, and the use of so-called “woke” terminology such as the gender-neutral “Latinx” lingo that is often deployed by white liberals.

One Democrat strategist noted to Politico that about 97 percent of Hispanic Americans do not use the term “Latinx.” On the Black Lives Matter movement, the data found that Hispanic Americans were “as receptive as non-Hispanic whites to a pro-police and pro-jobs message.”

China's Financial Distress Floods Shadow Banks As Trust Giant Scrambles For Liquidity

The wave of financial distress flooding China’s corporate sector, which has seen a furious selloff in bonds following the unexpected default of several state-owned enterprises, is spilling over into a key financing conduit used by China's giant shadow banking sector — the trust industry.

As Caixin reports, Huaxin Trust Co. one of 68 companies licensed to conduct trust business in China and one of the largest "shadow banks" in the mainland , is trying to raise as much as 6.8 billion yuan ($1 billion) from strategic investors as it faces a growing liquidity squeeze that’s already forced it to skip repayments on dozens of investment products over the past few months.

The Dalian, Liaoning province-based institution announced last Tuesday that it is seeking one or more strategic investors to inject 3.4 billion yuan to 6.8 billion yuan into the firm, which would increase its registered capital to 10 billion yuan to 13.4 billion yuan.

But, as Caixin's Timmy Shen writes, what drew the market’s attention was a condition stipulated by Huaxin that any investor would need to agree to "support the company’s liquidity before the completion of their investment to allow the firm to protect the interests of investors in its trust products." And while this is tantamount to a pledge to backstop a bailout of the core shadow banking pillar, one veteran trust-industry source told Caixin that it can be difficult to persuade strategic investors to provide liquidity support before even making their investment, although investors can use this as leverage to get better terms.

Even before the current episode of corporate bond turmoil triggered by the sudden defaults of state owned Yongcheng Coal and Brilliance Auto, China’s regulators had already become increasingly concerned about the hidden risks in the trust sector which plays an key role in the shadow banking sector by providing loans to higher-risk companies and those who have difficulty getting credit from traditional banks. The loans are packaged into high-yielding products which are then sold to retail investors and institutions.

For half a year, China's Banking and Insurance Regulatory Commission (CBIRC) has been preparing regulations to put the country’s $3.1 trillion trust industry under closer oversight. The draft rules, which were put out for public comment in May, will govern how trust companies manage client funds, clarify requirements on trust products and toughen regulation of their loan-related investments.

Then in June, as part of a wave of wholesale systemic deleveraging which hammered such real-estate development firms as China Evergrande and nearly brought it to the edge of insolvency, the CBIRC told some trust firms to downsize their trust financing business according to tailored specifications provided by the regulator. The unofficial orders from the regulator followed a surge in demand for loans as companies scrambled for cash to help them weather the impact of the Covid-19 outbreak or to repay maturing loans. Florida Holocaust museum opens exhibition about George Floyd

A Holocaust museum has opened an exhibition about George Floyd.

The Holocaust Memorial Resource and Education Center in Maitland, Florida, was founded in 1981 with the help of Tess Wise, a Holocaust survivor from Poland. The Holocaust museum officially opened in 1986 and was the "first Holocaust museum in the Southeast."

Last week, the Holocaust Memorial Resource and Education Center opened a new exhibition titled: "Uprooting Prejudice: Faces of Change." "In the wake of George Floyd's murder, we felt it was important to bring the meaning of the aftermath to our museum," the Holocaust Resource and Education Center said.

George Floyd died on May 25 while in police custody, and footage shows ex-Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin kneeling on the neck of Floyd for over eight minutes. In the days after Floyd's death, photographer John Noltner went to the Minneapolis intersection where Floyd died, and asked people, "What do you want to say?"

The exhibit features "45 black and white photos of individuals depicting their powerful emotions and thoughts in response to racism," according to the museum's Facebook page.

"The world is complex. Historical wounds are deep. In all the heated rhetoric of the day, we forget to listen. I hope that through these stories and these faces, you can understand the events of our day in a new way," Noltner said. "I hope you can challenge some of your own preconceptions and I hope you can see the humanity of each and every person. When I photograph a person—no matter who they are—I strive to leave a simple message: I see you. I hear you. And you matter."

Floyd's death sparked nationwide protests calling for justice, as well as riots across the country that are reported to be the "most expensive in insurance history," estimated between $1 billion to $2 billion of paid insurance claims.

The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum describes the Holocaust as the "systematic, bureaucratic, state-sponsored persecution and murder of six million Jewish men, women and children by the Nazi regime and its collaborators."

Earlier this month, CNN International anchor Christiane Amanpour compared President Donald Trump's first term to the Nazis' Kristallnacht on her cable news show. The segment was met with swift backlash; critics called the comparison "despicable" and "disgusting."

Trump Supporters in Georgia Threatening Boycott of Runoff Over 'Stolen' Election

Some Republicans in Georgia are angry at their party for apparently “giving up” and acknowledging Joe Biden as the winner of the presidential race in the state.

Some are threatening to boycott the runoff elections on January 5 for control of the Senate.

While in-person protests urged officials to call the election for Trump, a number of Republicans on the “free-speech” social media website Parler have demanded a boycott of the Senate runoff elections, citing a conspiracy theory about “rigged” voting machines. Screenshots shared by reporter Marcus Baram showed that people on the app accused Kemp and Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger of being “RINOs”—an acronym for “Republican in Name Only”—and trying to lead to victories for Democratic candidates Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff. Both Warnock and Ossoff are challenging incumbent Republican Senators Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue, respectively.

Many of the posts bore a resemblance to language used by people who believe the QAnon conspiracy theory.

“DO NOT VOTE IN THE GEORGIA RUNOFFS, THE DEEP STATE WILL BE COLLECTING EVERYONE’S INFO. THIS IS A CHARADE, MEANT TO IDENTIFY PEOPLE WHO DON’T VOTE DEMOCRAT,” another user wrote. “STAY HOME. OSSOFF AND WARNOCK ARE A SMALL PRICE TO PAY.”

It would be pathetic if it weren’t for the fact that Donald Trump is driving the conspiracy theories and is lashing out at Georgia GOP leaders.

Liberal law prof calls out Michigan Dem AG for 'abusive use of criminal code' over vote certification drama

'Imagine if this was AG Barr threatening Democratic legislators'

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel, a Democrat, is reportedly exploring a criminal investigation or criminal charges against Michigan officials who might try to block the certification of Michigan's election results at the alleged behest of President Donald Trump.

The development comes after two Wayne County Republicans moved to rescind their votes to certify their county's election results.

Also last week, four Michigan lawmakers, all Republicans, personally met with Trump at the White House. However, after that meeting, the lawmakers said in a statement that they would "follow the law and follow the normal process regarding Michigan's electors."

What are the details?

According to the Washington Post:

Michigan's attorney general is exploring whether officials there risk committing crimes if they bend to President Trump's wishes in seeking to block the certification of Joe Biden's victory in their state, according to two people familiar with the review.

The attorney general is conferring with election law experts on whether officials may have violated any state laws prohibiting them from engaging in bribery, perjury and conspiracy, according to people familiar with the deliberations who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss a sensitive matter.

In response to the controversy over Wayne County and Trump's meeting with Michigan lawmakers, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) said Trump is trying to "steal the election."

"The president can say all he wants. He can summon people to the White House all he wants. He can try to interfere… but the fact of the matter is Joe Biden won this state and won big," Whitmer told CNN last week.

"The will of the people will be done, and these efforts to disenfranchise Wayne County, where a majority of our African American voters live, is a blatant attempt to steal the election result and disenfranchise Michigan voters — and it will not stand," she added.

Biden legal adviser Bob Bauer similarly denounced the meeting, according to the Post.

"It's an abuse of office," Bauer said. "It's an open attempt to intimidate election officials. It's absolutely appalling."

What was the reaction?

Jonathan Turley, a professor at George Washington University Law School and self-described "liberal," responded to the report by accusing Nessel of "abusive use of the criminal code."

"Michigan AG Nessel and others are suggesting that Republicans who oppose certification or even meet with President Trump on the issue could be criminally investigated or charged. Once again, the media is silent on this abusive use of the criminal code," Turley said.
