They've also grown complacent after decades of being in power. Their children probably grew up thinking that they'd never have to fight to keep power, leaving them with a "built-in" arrogance. It's a recipe for ending up woefully out of touch. They probably sat around thinking they could just cast old spells and use the same old tricks to beat back an uprising, refusing to recognize the signs that they've lost their grip.
