Having ownership of patents does not necessarily mean exercising control over the implementation and operation of those patents. It means being able to decide whether to license the patents to others or not, and able to get royalties if you do strike licensing agreements with licensees.
It does show an important connection though. Patents are public domain information, so it does not mean the bank got some proprietary information.
