All the years listening to "Downunder", never even thought, let alone considered the short flute riff to be a rip-off
of "Kookaburra" (a harmless kids nursery rhyme). When I hum both in my head I STILL don't think the notes are
the SAME. Looking back, it's the TONAL effect that captures the essence and, if anything, it was a PATRIOT
paying unashamed HOMAGE to his country!
There have been many more blatant songs that even have tune/lyrics/title unmistakenly ghosted (think: Zepp).
Moreover, how many TV adverts have you seen where the backing track is intentionally/embarrassingly/virtually
the same with a couple of notes to dodge copyright/paying the original (usually current) artist.
Larrikin (noun - "a person with apparent disregard for convention; a maverick") Music bought the rights to
"Kookaburra" (sits in the old gum tree (circa 1934)) that young Aussie kids of all generations grew up singing
along to (hey, kitsch is cool!). LM bought the rights to "Kookaburra" WELL AFTER "Downunder" was
written/performed and sued twenty-something years later - can't help but think that this was possibly planned/done
intentionally all along. The repeated plagiaristic monologues of Cheatin' Joe Biden are far more offensive!
Saw Men At Work, must've been early eighties IIRC at The Planto - a (then) scrawny Colin Hay with wonky eye
& dark green nylon footy shorts,singing up front. Back before PC culture took over the world - when taking-the-piss
(usually, out of yourself) was an Aussie trait that was revered/honoured. Alas, even the cringing affection for
The Yobbo is being diluted in the name of "diversity".
