Scott Morrison defends $4,000 per hour plane for Mathias Cormann's OECD pitch, says 'he would have got COVID' flying commercial

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has defended allowing a former government minister to fly around the world on a taxpayer-funded Royal Australian Air Force jet.

Former WA senator Mathias Cormann has clocked up more than 20,000 kilometres campaigning to become the next head of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

Air Force planes cost taxpayers more than $4,000 per hour of flying, but Mr Morrison said using commercial flights would have been risky.

"There really wasn't the practical option to use commercial flights in the time we had available, because of COVID," he told radio station 2GB.

"If Mathias was flying around on commercial planes he would have got COVID, the risk of that was extremely high."

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) is supporting Mr Cormann's campaign with a taskforce of eight staff, and he is also accompanied by one DFAT officer while overseas.

"The duties of the taskforce include coordinating advocacy by the Prime Minister and senior ministers, visit and travel coordination, as well as the preparation of briefs and communications materials to support the campaign," a DFAT spokesperson said.

The staff will return to other duties when the campaign concludes in March 2021.

Former senator Natasha Stott Despoja successfully won a spot on a UN committee fighting for equality for women last month.

She told the Sydney Morning Herald she travelled to Washington in March, and to Canberra during the pandemic, but otherwise campaigned via teleconference from her Adelaide home, participating in close to 200 meetings.

Pompeo Says State Dept Looking at GSA Decision to Greenlight Presidential Transition

Biden's transition team has already named its Secretary of State-to-be, filling the key post with Antony Blinken, who was a top-ranking official in the Obama administration and is known as a strong backer of multilateralist policies.

The State Department has begun the process of looking into the General Service Administration's (GSA) decision to initiate the process of transferring power to Democrat Joe Biden, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo indicated on Tuesday.

On Monday, GSA head Emily Murphy notified Biden in a letter that the transfer of power can formally start, acknowledging the former vice president as the likely winner in the 2020 election.

"Today we began the process to see what the GSA's decision was, and will do everything that's required by law. We'll make this work", Pompeo said in an interview on Fox News.

Earlier on Tuesday, US media reported that the Trump administration has authorised Biden to receive the president's daily intelligence reports - something that his team complained he had not had access to, though the Office of the Director of National Intelligences said it won't contact the Biden team until GSA ascertains Biden as the likely president-elect.

Pentagon officials and Biden's team have entered discussions on the transition process with Pentagon officials. According to the head of the Department of Defense transition team Thomas Muir, the Biden team will be provided office space, while the Pentagon plans to hold a number of operational and other briefings.

Meanwhile, Biden has already named several people to fill the key posts in the White House, most of whom the former vice president worked alongside during his tenure in the Obama Administration, including Blinken. The latter has held top-level national security and State Department positions and is well known in national security circles, developing a reputation as a pragmatic realist and a strong backer of multilateral institutions.

Biden's pick for the US Ambassador to the United Nations post, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, is also pushing for multilateralism as the main principle of the future US foreign policy. "America is back, multilateralism is back, diplomacy is back", she said during an event at Biden's hometown of Wilmington, Delaware.

According to the ex-vice president, his newly picked team will "keep America safe without engaging in needless military conflicts".

Trump Refuses to Concede

As of now, Biden has claimed victory in the battleground states of Pennsylvania, Nevada, Michigan, and Georgia, according to the states' certified election results, and is projected by most mainstream media as the president-elect in the 2020 race.

Though President Donald Trump has approved of the GSA proceeding with the transfer process, he has not conceded so far, saying it is not within the body's competence to determine the next US president. Trump has vowed to continue the legal fight to ensure all ballots cast in the presidential election are legitimate.

According to Trump, this year's election was "rigged" by Democrats to favour their candidate Biden. The president's campaign has filed legal challenges in several of these key swing states but the president's path to challenge the results has narrowed significantly, as most of his lawsuits have been dismissed or withdrawn.

US Refuses to Lift Chinese Tech Firm ZTE's Threat Designation

Chinese software company ZTE's request to free itself from a US national security threat designation has been denied, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) said in a statement.

The FCC announced in June it had formally designated ZTE and China's Huawei Technologies Co as threats after in August 2018, US President Donald Trump signed a decree that barred US departments from using network equipment made by Huawei and ZTE for national security reasons.

"The Federal Communications Commission's Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau today denied a petition for reconsideration of the Bureau’s June 30, 2020 order designating ZTE as a company posing a national security threat to the integrity of communications networks or the communications supply chain", the FCC said on Tuesday. "After reviewing the record, the Bureau found no basis for reconsideration".

As a result, the FCC's $8.3 billion a year Universal Service Fund cannot be used to purchase, obtain, maintain, improve, modify or otherwise support any equipment or services produced or provided by ZTE, as well as its parents, affiliates, and subsidiaries, the statement added.

Washington has convinced several European countries that Huawei is allegedly colluding with the Chinese government, as they subsequently banned the tech giant from 5G state contracts, citing fears of espionage and other risks for national security. Likewise, the UK government has said that the country's 5G networks would be Huawei-free starting from January 2021 to the end of 2027.

The FCC will vote on 10 December on rules to help carriers remove and replace untrusted equipment from networks.

Jake Sullivan Trashed Trump’s Israel Policy In Interview With Chinese Propaganda Outlet

Jake Sullivan, the incoming national security adviser, criticized President Donald Trump’s policies related to the Middle East during an interview in late 2017 with CGTN, a Beijing-based media outlet controlled by the Chinese government.

Sullivan appeared on the network to discuss Trump’s announcement that he would begin the process to relocate the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem and recognize the city as Israel’s capital.

“This was a political decision, not a foreign policy decision. This was about Trump and his supporters. It was not about moving the peace process forward,” Sullivan said in the interview, which aired Dec. 9, 2017.

Sullivan asserted that Trump’s decision “created turbulence and turmoil” in negotiations for a peace deal between Israel, Palestine and other nations in the Middle East.

“It’s hard to find a good argument for this decision with respect to advancing the cause of peace in the Middle East,” said Sullivan, who was a top adviser to Hillary Clinton at the State Department and to Joe Biden when he was vice president.

Biden announced on Tuesday that Sullivan would be his White House national security adviser.

“I don’t believe that we were near a peace agreement between the Israelis and Palestinians,” Sullivan said in the CGTN interview.

The Justice Department requires CGTN, formerly known as CCTV, to register under the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) because it is controlled by the Chinese government.

Sullivan appeared for the CGTN interview in his capacity as a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, a top foreign policy think tank.

Carnegie has received between $500,000 and $1 million in funding from Zhang Yichen, the CEO of CITIC Group, one of China’s largest state-owned investment companies.

According to Carnegie’s website, Zhang, who is a trustee at the think tank, is a member of the Eleventh and Twelfth National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, an advisory group to the Chinese communist party.

While at the State Department, Sullivan sent and received hundreds of classified emails that were stored on the private email server Clinton used while she was secretary of state.

In 2016, as a senior foreign policy adviser on the Clinton campaign, Sullivan pushed allegations of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian government that have since been proven inaccurate.

In an interview in 2018, Sullivan defended the Clinton campaign’s role in funding the Steele dossier, which included false allegations of a conspiracy between the Trump campaign and Kremlin to influence the 2016 election.

The Biden transition team did not respond to a request for comment.

Milwaukee Elections Commission Refuses to Allow Trump Reps to See Absentee Ballot Envelopes or Ballots Clearly #StopTheSteal

The Trump campaign paid millions of dollars for a recount in Wisconsin’s Milwaukee and Dane counties.

Recall, Wisconsin suspended counting on election night when President Trump was ahead of Joe Biden by approximately 130,000 votes.

Then suddenly a day after Election Day at 3:42 AM, Joe Biden received a dump of 143,379 votes.

President Trump tweeted out the graph showing Wisconsin’s time stamped entries and the massive ballot dump shows a huge spike at 3:42 AM on Wednesday, November 4.

We are now on day 5 of the Wisconsin recount and Milwaukee election commission officials are still not allowing Trump’s representatives to see absentee ballot envelopes or ballots.

Last week the Wisconsin Elections Commission argued over what guidelines to give Dane and Milwaukee County election clerks for the state’s partial recount.

Republican commissioner Bob Spindell accused the Democrats on the committee of using Covid as an excuse to change election laws.
