What Viacom’s Sale Of Simon & Schuster Means For The Company

In a $2.18 billion deal, ViacomCBS sold Simon & Schuster to Penguin Random House. The deal is expected to be completed in early 2021.

ViacomCBS planned to auction off the famous publisher to help pay off debt and pay out its dividend, CNBC reported. The company wants to focus more on streaming.

Jonathan Karp, Simon & Schuster’s CEO, will continue to run the publishing conglomerate even after being acquired by Penguin Random House, The New York Times reported.

In an interview, Karp told The Times that even though Simon & Schuster is under new ownership, not much will change.

“This is a company that respects the creative autonomy of publishers,” he said. “We’ll all still be competing against each other. Publishing is a business-driven by individual passions for books and for writers.”

Karp also tried to ease employee tensions in a memo that he sent to his staff.

"From these transformations, we have adjusted to new management, welcomed other companies into our fold, and always emerged stronger, with an enduring commitment to excellence in book publishing. When we join Penguin Random House after closing, we can look forward to benefiting from exciting new relationships and opportunities that will enhance our ability to provide authors with the best possible publication they can receive," Karp wrote in a memo obtained by CNN.

As both publishers await final details in the deal, fears over monopolizing are apparent. Simon & Schuster and Penguin Random House are two of the largest publishers in the world. A merger between both companies would possibly mean fewer book deals for lesser-known authors and agents.

Literary agent David Kuhn told the Times, “There are projects that would have sold for $150,000 years ago that might not sell at all now to the big five, whereas the book that would have sold for $500,000 might go for a million,” he said. “They would rather go in bigger for the thing that they have the most consensus on.”

“For certain books, there will be only four possible customers, down from five,” Logical Company CEO Mike Shatzkin told The Times. “It’s another sign of how the trade publishing ecosystem has weakened.”

New ‘Study’ Claims ‘Far-Right Terrorism’ is ‘Bigger Threat to West Than Islamic State’

Confirming what all of our self-proclaimed moral superiors already knew, Euractiv.com reported Wednesday that according to a new study that has just been issued by the Institute of Economics and Peace (IEP), “the number of far-right terrorist acts has risen by 250% since 2014. When it comes to fatalities, the increase was even more than 700% within five years, with 89 people killed in 2019.” In fact, “there are now more right-wing attacks than at any other time in the past 50 years, with 13 far-right terrorist attacks that had each killed more than 10 people, compared to 24 Islamist attacks, and three linked to other ideologies, the report found.” As Benjamin Disraeli put it, “There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics.”

The IEP’s Executive Director Steve Killelea solemnly intoned: “As a new decade begins, we see new terrorist threats. The rise in right-wing extremism in the West and the deterioration in the Sahel are prime examples.”

The Institute of Economics and Peace says that its “research is used extensively by governments, academic institutions, think tanks, non‑governmental organisations and by intergovernmental institutions such as the OECD, The Commonwealth Secretariat, the World Bank and the United Nations.” So now you know where it’s coming from, and what its agenda is.

In any case, note the sleight of hand here. “Far-right terrorism” is compared with the Islamic State. The Islamic State is one of a great many jihad organizations worldwide, yet it alone is being compared with what is presumably several different organizations lumped together as “far-right terrorism.” The threat of al-Qaeda and other jihad groups would make the jihad threat substantially greater, but that is not the objective of this study.

Another important aspect of this issue was reported last week in American Military News. According to former CIA agent Brad Johnson, “Terrorism and Extremist Violence in the United States (TEVUS) is a US government-funded database that tabulates violent attacks in the United States. Used by the US government and media alike, it is one of the fundamental sources of information about who is conducting violent attacks in the United States. TEVUS reporting appears to set out to cover up Islamic, Arab, Black Nationalist, and Left-Wing terrorism and extremist violence and attempts to document white and right-wing violence where little to no violence actually exists.”

TEVUS does this simply by misrepresenting the available data. “In a blatant display of data manipulation, the exclusively Arab 9/11 hijackers who murdered nearly 3,000 innocent people were categorized by TEVUS as ‘White/Caucasian non-Hispanic’ and as a result, TEVUS is able to attribute all of those killed in 9/11 to whites. This is by far the largest source of deaths attributed to acts of violence by whites and wildly throws off the actual statistics to make white right-wing violence appear common. TEVUS reports there are 39 court cases which they characterize as right-wing, yet there is only one reference of any kind to terrorism in any of these court cases and that was a single instance where the attacker referred to his target as a ‘terrorist’ and a ‘suicide bomber.’”

Tesla Issues Two Recalls, More Than 9,500 Vehicles Affected

Tesla said Wednesday that it was recalling some 9,500 of its vehicles because of safety issues related to adhesions on the roof trim that could separate.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said most of the recalls related to Model X vehicles from 2016.

A cosmetic trim near the roof and front windshield is adhered using urethane. If the manufacturer applied the urethane without enough primer, the trim could separate from the vehicle.

“While we are not aware of any accidents or injuries resulting from this condition, if the applique separates from the vehicle while in drive, it could create a road hazard for following motorists and increase their risk of injury or a crash,” the NHTSA said in a Wednesday statement

Tesla, according to the documents, discovered the issue with some 2016 model year vehicles in September and started its own investigation into the root cause and frequency of the issue. On its own admission, the NHTSA stated that Tesla concluded “tentatively” that its suppliers may have lacked sufficient primer during application.

Tesla’s service centers will inspect all of the recalled vehicles to check the issue and apply primer if necessary.

A separate recall involving some 900 Model Y vehicles from 2020 relates to steering knuckles, part of the vehicle’s suspension and steering component.

“The bolts connecting the front upper control arm and steering knuckle may have not been properly tightened, allowing the upper control arm to detach from the steering knuckle,” the NHTSA said in a letter to David Kim, the compliance manager for the company. “A detached upper control arm can cause the wheels to lean in or out, decreasing the driver's ability to steer and increasing the risk of a crash.”

As with the urethane issue, Tesla service centers will remedy the situation free of charge if the recalled vehicles are found to have problems with the steering knuckles. The NHTSA did not indicate if any injuries or damage were associated with the issue on the Model Y.

Tesla reported a record third quarter with more than $1.9 billion in free cash flow. Ahead of its listing on the S&P stock exchange, the company’s market value topped $526 billion, making founder Elon Musk one of the richest people in the world.
