I think you're missing what happened here. They DID write the algo the way you said. Trump got so many people engaged and out to vote that HE BROKE THE ALGO. There was no way they could tip to the win without treading into impossible waters.
Remember how they stopped the machines and waited for updates and new technicians to show up in multiple states.
