I read the history of Hawaii and of the V.I. It seems to be a cultural thing before the missionaries came and told them about morals. They were very very free with sex. Hawaii in particular was so well known to the mariners of the 18-19th Century that they made stops specifically to hook up with the beautiful Hawaiians.To such a degree that sexually transmitted diseases for the natives was rampant. The Virgin Islands have a similar 'free love/sex' ideology though comparitively it is more subdued that in centuries past.
