Christian A. Coomer

 

Judge Christian A. Coomer was appointed to the Court of Appeals of Georgia by Governor Nathan Deal and began serving on October 31, 2018 and subsequently elected to his first full term on June 9, 2020. Prior to his appointment to the Court, Judge Coomer was elected the Georgia House of Representatives where he served for eight years, representing the people of Bartow and Floyd Counties. Before and during his service in the General Assembly, Judge Coomer ran a successful sole practice law firm in Cartersville. He served four years on active duty as an Air Force Judge Advocate General (JAG) and worked as a Special Assistant United States Attorney during that time. He began his legal career as a litigation associate in Northeast Georgia. As a third-year law student at the University of Georgia, Judge Coomer worked as a Special Assistant District Attorney in the Mountain Judicial Circuit.

 

Judge Coomer was first elected to the Georgia House of Representatives in 2010. He served as an Administration Floor Leader and Chairman of the Committee on Transportation before being unanimously elected by his colleagues to serve as the Majority Caucus Whipa position he held until his appointment to the Court. Judge Coomer served as a member of the standing committees on Appropriations, Banks and Banking, Ethics, Judiciary Noncivil, Juvenile Justice, Retirement, Rules, and Transportation. He was also appointed to the Public Defender Council Legislative Oversight Committee, the Fiscal Affairs Oversight Joint Subcommittee, the Juvenile Justice State Advisory Group, the Joint Transit Study Committee, and he chaired a study committee established to rewrite the Georgia Code of Military Justice. In 2017, Governor Deal appointed Judge Coomer to the Court Reform Commission. The same year, Judge Coomer was named Legislator of the Year by the Georgia Chamber of Commerce.

 

For more than 13 years, Judge Coomer maintained a thriving sole practice law firm in Cartersville. He practiced in every class of Georgia’s trial courts, the appellate courts of the state, and in federal courts. In addition, he represented clients before various administrative agencies and local government tribunals. His practice included civil and criminal clients in cases that covered a broad array of subject matters in venues across the state. He also served as the Municipal Court Judge for the City of Adairsville.

 

Judge Coomer spent four years on active duty with the United State Air Force before serving in the Georgia Air National Guard and the Air Force Reserve. During his tenure in the JAG Corps, Judge Coomer worked as a Special Assistant United States Attorney, represented the Air Force in labor and employment matters before federal and state agencies, served as general counsel to a military hospital, prosecuted courts-martial, trained military members on law enforcement standards and the law of armed conflict, and managed the busiest General Courts-Martial docket in the Air Force. Judge Coomer completed Air Command and Staff College at Air University, Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama. He has been awarded the Air Force Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, and the Global War on Terrorism Medal, among other awards and decorations.Judge Coomer holds the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

 

Judge Coomer received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication from Lee University in Cleveland, Tennessee and earned his Juris Doctor degree at the University of Georgia in Athens.

 

Judge Coomer has served as a member of several non-profit organizations including the Good Neighbor Homeless Shelter, Adairsville Church of God, and North Bartow Toys for Tots. In 2015, Judge Coomer was awarded the Chief Justice Robert Benham award for his contributions to the profession of law as a leader in community service and volunteerism.

 

Christian met his wife Heidi at Lee University, where she earned her degree in Music. They have three children: Christian, Collin, and Vivian.
