Nasdaq clinches record on Black Friday but broader market books muted gains in holiday-abbreviated session

 

U.S. stocks finished the day and week in positive territory on Black Friday, with technology-laden Nasdaq Composite leading the way higher in a holiday-shortened session. The Nasdaq Composite Index COMP, 0.92% finished at a record on the session, ending up 0.9% to reach around 12,205, the S&P 500 index SPX, 0.24% closed up 0.2% to 3,638, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, 0.13% managed to work out a 0.1% gain to close at 29,910, just below its milestone at 30,000. For the week, the Dow finished 2.2% higher, the S&P 500 marked a 2.3% gain and the Nasdaq Composite ended nearly 3% higher over the period. Equity markets close at 1 p.m. in the trading session after Thanksgiving.

 

Gold prices fall on Black Friday, log steepest weekly fall in 2 months

 

Gold futures on Friday settled sharply lower, registering the biggest weekly slide since late September, as the metals prices have been buffeted by upbeat news on coronavirus vaccines that have driven investors to equities and away from the perceived haven of bullion. February gold GCG21, -1.13%, the new most-active contract, lost $23.10, or 1.27%,Friday to settle at $1,788.10 an oz. Gold shed 4.5% on the week, based on the most-active contract. The weekly slide marks the sharpest for gold futures since the week ended Sept. 25, FactSet data show.
