I think you always need to be your own best advocate and be as knowledgeable as possible. My mother never trusted doctors. She got her own medical books back in the 80's, she has no background in medicine, she was an English teacher. But she is the reason I'm still alive, I had bacterial meningitis as a child and 3 different doctors told her I just had a cold and dismissed her. She kept taking me to different doctors until she found one that was knew what she already knew, it wasn't just a cold.
