In Philippines where I live, the Board of Health statistics are downloadably by year.

In 2017 there were 57,000 deaths for "influenza, pneumonia, and other respiratory conditions."

In 2020 we have about 7,500 "deaths" by Corona, and almost no one getting the flu.

Now I knew this back in March, when we only had 1,000 deaths and it was obvious Corona would never kill more than 10K people this year. So where are our health directors? Where are the government policy people? Can they not read?

I try to put myself in the shoes of the policy makers.

In the beginning: OK we don't know WTF this is, better be cautious. Lets develop some action criteria, and since it is new, lets compare it to other diseases that we have data on.

In the middle: OK, we still don't understand much about the virus or how it is transmitted, or if the restrictions are having any effect. But now we have recent statistics on how deadly it is, and to whom. So lets adjust our policy decisions to reflect that.

At the end: Well, we were overcautious in the beginning. But we can also see that there is serious political bullshit coming from the global policy makers. We must ignore them now, and go by our own conclusions, which is this is no more deadly than flu.

Now wouldn't it be great if that was the thinking processes used. BUT NO. That is NOT the thinking process used, unfortunately.
