Facebook Censorship Algos Go Haywire, Blocking Ads From Struggling Legitimate Businesses As "Hate Speech"

In what is definitely some type of Karmic payback for social media companies now appending some type of label to what seems like every other post nowadays, Facebook just found out that its super-duper censoring algorithm also banned advertisements from some struggling businesses, mistaking them as hate speech.

We love it when a plan comes together.

One woman, Ruth Harrigan, who advertises on Facebook to sell her honey and beeswax-based products, told Bloomberg she thought she missed out on an estimated $5,000 in revenue after Facebook mistakenly banned her ads right before black Friday.

She said: “I was getting a little anxious thinking, ‘Oh my God, Black Friday is around the corner, most of my sales for the year happen in November and December and that’s it,'. I said, ‘If I’m shut down any longer than this, it’ll cripple me.’”

The company's "misfiring content-moderation software" was to blame - and it happened in the middle of a pandemic when sellers are more reliant on Facebook and social media advertising to drive business. In fact, Facebook has been censoring so much content this year, it has relied heavily on software to do the job, since they don't have enough human moderators.

Now, back to that Section 230 discussion…

Arrests made as anti-lockdown protesters march in London, defying police warning to obey Covid-19 restrictions

Massive crowds gathered in central London on Saturday to protest lockdown measures designed to combat the Covid-19 pandemic, and police followed through on their promise to arrest demonstrators, leading to multiple clashes.

Ahead of the protest, Metropolitan Police released a statement warning anyone planning to travel to King’s Cross that current lockdown measures do not permit massive crowds.

“Ahead of a planned protest on Saturday, 28 November, the Met is urgently reminding those looking to attend that protest is not currently a permitted exemption to the prohibition on gatherings under the current Coronavirus regulations,” they said.

Anyone gathered, they warned, “risks enforcement action by officers.”

Footage from the event showed officers making multiple arrests, some of them leading to clashes with the crowd, many of whom were not wearing masks. Officers would at times create a wall as arrests were being made to prevent other protesters from getting closer.

The UK’s second major lockdown is due to end on Wednesday, December 2. However, this lockdown will be replaced by a tier system where regions will be graded based on their risk level, which critics have argued could essentially end up being an extension of lockdown for large numbers of citizens, as many areas will be deemed ‘high’ risk and face continued restrictions.

There have been nearly 1.6 million Covid-19 cases in the UK, as well as more than 57,000 deaths.

Thousands of protesters march in France against security law that bans filming police

Protesters throughout France have shown up for rallies against a controversial draft law on public safety, under which filming a police officer on duty may result in a hefty fine. Critics say it fosters impunity for misconduct.

The protests were organized in many large French cities, including Paris, Marseilles, Lyon, Brest and Nice, with thousands participating despite Covid-19 concerns. The main event is happening in the Place de la République in the capital.

The demonstrators are voicing their anger over a draft law on public security, which was approved by the lower chamber of the parliament this week. Article 24 of the bill bans filming of police officers on duty with an intention to harm them. Lawmakers who voted for the bill are among the officials who were shamed by the protesters.

The reasoning behind the provision, which introduces a fine of €45,000 ($53,450) or even a one-year jail term, is that members of the force need to be protected from doxxing and online harassment. Critics say it curtails journalistic freedoms and would be used to intimidate people who want to expose police brutality and other forms of misconduct.

The protests were organized by unions, but they have many supporters. The Yellow Vests movement, which was sparked by growing social and economic inequality and for months remained a major problem for President Emmanuel Macron, is among them.

McKinsey told OxyContin producer to pay off distributors for every attributable overdose, court papers show – report

Consultancy firm McKinsey suggested its client, Purdue Pharma, pay rebates to distributors of OxyContin for every overdose case that could be traced to abuse of the opioid pill as part of its plan to “turbocharge” sales.

The suggestion was discovered by the New York Times in court documents, which were released last week under a Purdue Pharma bankruptcy process. Last month, the big pharma firm agreed to plead guilty to criminal charges involving its aggressive push of its dangerous product, which contributed to the opioid health crisis in the US.

It is reported that in a 2017 presentation, McKinsey laid out several suggestions for boosting sales of the pill, including by compensating distributors the damage from selling the product. It estimated the number of people who may overdose or get hooked on OxyContin and suggested paying rebates for “events” that could be reliably attributed to it.

For example, the report explains, a rebate of $14,810 for each of the 2,484 cases – which the consultancy firm projected would happen in 2019 due to OxyContin sold through CVS Health’s pharmacy chain – would net the distributor $36.8 million. CVS and another firm mentioned in the presentation, Anthem, are among McKinsey’s biggest clients. Both companies said they never received any rebates under a scheme described in the court papers.

It is said that senior McKinsey partners also discussed in 2018 doing more than “eliminating all our documents and emails.” The suggestion was reportedly floated by Martin Elling, a leader for McKinsey’s North American pharmaceutical practice, in response to the news that the state of Massachusetts had sued a former Purdue board member for her role in fueling the opioid crisis. Elling’s addressee, Arnab Ghatak, responded as quoted: “Thanks for the heads up. Will do.” It’s not clear if any records were actually destroyed by McKinsey.

UN Dubs Self 'Trusted' Pandemic News Source, Teams Up With World Economic Forum To Encourage 'New Social Norms'

The United Nations has 'launched a counter-attack' against coronavirus misinformation - by teaming up with the World Economic Forum to battle coronavirus misinformation and other 'potentially dubious content.'

"When COVID-19 emerged, it was clear from the outset this was not just a public health emergency, but a communications crisis as well," says Melissa Flemming, the UN's head of global communications.

"We’re trying to create this new social norm called ‘pause - take care before you share’ - she continued, adding "We're equipping people, through this new social norm, with a bit of 'information scepticism'."

The new initiative also seeks to rope social media influencers into spreading 'real news' about the pandemic - which we assume means nothing to do with hydroxychloroquine, incredibly low fatality rates for most people below retirement age, or anyone even slightly opposed to business-killing lockdowns.

One also has to wonder how the UN and WEF would cover egregious flip-flops from global health authorities on everything from transmissibility to mask use.

Regardless, the UN's campaign is steadfast in their self-determined authority as arbiters of all things COVID.

"So far, we've recruited 110,000 information volunteers, and we equip these information volunteers with the kind of knowledge about how misinformation spreads and ask them to serve as kind of 'digital first-responders' in those spaces where misinformation travels," said Flemming.

Tony Hsieh, retired Zappos CEO, dead at 46

Tony Hsieh, the former CEO of online shoe retailer Zappos.com, has died. He was 46.

He passed away Friday in Connecticut, according to a statement from DTP Companies, an investment firm he founded in Las Vegas.

A lawyer for Hsieh told reporters he had died from injuries he sustained in a house fire. His exact cause of death was not immediately clear. Hsieh was reportedly with his brother in Connecticut at the time of the fire.

“With a heavy and devastated heart, we regret to inform you that Tony Hsieh passed away peacefully on November 27, 2020 surrounded by his beloved family,” DTP spokeswoman Megan Fazio said in a statement, TechCrunch reported. “Tony’s kindness and generosity touched the lives of everyone around him, and forever brightened the world.”

Hsieh was the epitome of a Silicon Valley tech superstar. He grew up in the Bay Area and sold his first company to Microsoft in 1998 at the age of 24. He then used the profits to start a Venture Capital firm that invested in a shoe retail site, according to TechCrunch.

The site eventually spawned Zappos, which sold to Amazon in 2009 for $1.2 billion.

He went on to found DTP in 2012. The company has acquired 45 acres of real estate in Vegas and invested $350 million in everything from real estate developments and small businesses to startups and health care, according to its website.

US women's soccer team wear 'Black Lives Matter' uniforms, protest national anthem in Europe

'Today, we wear Black Lives Matter to affirm human decency'

After not playing for nearly nine months, the United States women's soccer team protested the national anthem and made a social justice statement with "Black Lives Matter" uniforms prior to a game on Friday.

Ahead of their game with the Netherlands' national team, the American women walked out of the locker room wearing jackets emblazoned with "Black Lives Matter." During the playing of the American national anthem, nearly every member of the team knelt, according to ESPN, a sign of protest against America.

"We wear Black Lives Matter to affirm human decency. This is not political, it's a statement on human rights," the USWNT Twitter account said, along with a video showing the Black Lives Matter uniform jacket.

In a statement, the team said they "love our country" and called it "a true honor to represent America," but explained that supporting Black Lives Matter is an affirmation of "human decency."

The statement said:

We love our country, and it is a true honor to represent America. It is also our duty to demand that the liberties and freedoms that our country was founded on extend to everyone.

Today, we wear Black Lives Matter to affirm human decency. We protest against racial injustice and police brutality against Black people. We protest against the racist infrastructures that do not provide equal opportunity for Black and brown people to fulfill their dreams, including playing on this team. As the United States Women's National team players, we collectively work toward a society where the American ideals are upheld, and Black lives are no longer systematically targeted.

Black Lives Matter.

Friday's game, the first in 261 days, was also the team's first game since racial unrest gripped the U.S. in the early summer following George Floyd's tragic death.

The U.S. men's soccer team also wore social justice messages on their pregame jersey's earlier this month, in their first outing since Floyd's death. The team wore anthem jackets with the words "Be the Change" emblazoned on the front with differing messages on the back, including, "Black Lives Matter," "Be Anti-Racist," and "Unity," according to ESPN.

The women's soccer team won Friday's game by a score of 2-0.

Teen collapses after receiving nearly 150 lashes for raping a child

A teenager convicted of raping a child in Indonesia’s most conservative region collapsed during a public whipping that saw him lashed nearly 150 times for violating Islamic law.

The unidentified 19-year-old cried out as a masked officer lashed his back with a rattan stick in the town of Idi Rayeuk in East Aceh on Thursday, according to a report by Agence France Presse.

The teenager was briefly treated by doctors when he pleaded for the caning to stop but the severe punishment continued. He had been sentenced to 146 lashes, a heavy penalty reserved for the most serious crimes in the region, according to a local prosecutor.

“The maximum sentence is meant to be a deterrent,” Ivan Nanjjar Alavi, an official from the East Aceh prosecutor’s office, told reporters.

The victim was not identified by prosecutors.

The Indonesian province, which follows strict sharia law, allows whipping for a range of charges — including gambling, adultery, drinking alcohol, and having gay or premarital sex

US Justice Department amends federal execution rules to allow death by hanging, electric chair, gas chamber & FIRING SQUAD

The US Department of Justice has expanded rules governing executions to permit a wider rage of methods, including firing squads and electrocution, as five federal inmates are set to face the death penalty before Inauguration Day.

The amended rule was entered into the Federal Register on Friday, permitting the government “greater flexibility” to carry out capital punishment using any method “prescribed by the law of the state in which [a] sentence was imposed.” While lethal injection remains the most common means of execution — and previously the only one permitted under federal regulations — the new rule will accommodate states that allow for alternative methods, including death by electrocution, nitrogen gas, hanging or firing squad.

The proposed rule change was initially floated in August — with the DOJ accepting public comments for only 30 days, half of the period typically allotted — and passed a White House review earlier this month, according to ProPublica, which was first to report on the amended regulation.

While five federal prisoners are currently slated for execution before President Donald Trump leaves office in late January, the rule change is not expected to affect their cases, as each is already set to receive lethal injection.

After Years of Lies, Brexit Conspiracy Theorist Carole Cadwalladr’s Grift Unravels

What happens when an investigative reporter was lying all along? What happens to their editors? To their newspaper? What’s the reward for truth-telling in journalism, if one is handed cash prizes and historic awards for peddling fake news?

Americans ponder such questions as they relate to Russiagate – the debunked idea that Russian President Vladimir Putin was behind the election of President Trump. Britons have our own Russia Lie hawked by supposedly reputable news outlets and agencies: that Putin – yes, Putin again – made 17.4 million Brits vote to leave the European Union.

While farcical claims about Putin backing Brexit swirled before the referendum in June 2016, serious allegations about collaboration between leading Brexit backers and the Russian government emerged in early February 2017 in Britain’s Observer newspaper, under the byline of features writer Carole Cadwalladr.

Cadwalladr, 51, had to that point earned a living writing little-read books and filing interviews with left-wing celebrities like Richard Dawkins, Amir Khan, and Nate Silver.

In late 2016 Cadwalladr began to develop a taste for a different kind of story: the fake news story.

Armed with little other than her hunches on topics of global political intrigue, the Somerset-born scribbler took to piecing together a grand conspiracy theory: that an American billionaire, a Member of the European Parliament, an insurance salesman, and the incoming White House Chief Strategist duped the entire British public with a handful of digital advertisements at the behest of the Russian President.

For Cadwalladr, there was just one problem: there was no evidence of such a grand conspiracy. So she’d have to make some up.

‘The press, honestly, is out of control.’

Cadwalladr’s first major article on the subject came on Sunday, February 26th 2017. Ironically, it began with her attacking Donald Trump for attacking the media and its penchant for “fake news.”

“Just over a week ago, Donald Trump gathered members of the world’s press before him and told them they were liars,” Cadwalladr bemoaned in her opening paragraph in an article entitled, “Robert Mercer: the big data billionaire waging war on mainstream media.”

She noted the newly-inaugurated President’s comments: “The press, honestly, is out of control… The public doesn’t believe you any more,” etc, etc.

Fast forward almost four years, and her opening salvo should serve as a fitting epitaph to her journalistic career.

Cadwalladr was recently forced by a British court to apologize for her phony claims about Brexit-backer Arron Banks. Just three weeks later she voluntarily removed “the Truth Defence and the Limitation Defence” in a court case wherein she was expected to defend her claim that Banks worked with “the Russians” and that Russia had somehow financed the pro-Brexit campaign.

Westminster blogger Guido Fawkes simplified the story: “it was all complete cock ‘n bull.”

And while the most recent developments will surely cost Cadwalladr a pretty penny – in excess of $83,000 up front, to be precise – the cost to journalism, public trust, and democracy itself is surely far greater.

Boris Johnson names business minister Nadhim Zahawi top UK official responsible for vaccine deployment

UK Conservative Party politician Nadhim Zahawi has been appointed as under secretary of state responsible for the deployment of a Covid-19 vaccine across the country, signalling a massive vaccination programme is forthcoming.

The prime minister’s office said Zahawi’s new position is temporary and will last until at least next summer.

According to UK media, Zahawi is expected to oversee the rollout of a vaccine across the country once it is approved. He will report to Health Secretary Matt Hancock.

Zahawi has served as parliamentary under secretary of state at the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy since 2019, and will retain this portfolio.

On Friday, Zahawi said he was “extremely disappointed and sad” that his constituency in Warwickshire was slated to be moved to Tier 3 quarantine restrictions next week. He warned the stricter lockdown will cripple the area’s economy, especially its tourism industry.

Earlier this week, the government asked the country’s medical regulator to provide its opinion on the Covid-19 vaccine developed by the British-Swedish company AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford. If authorised, the company is expected to produce up to four million doses for the UK by the end of the year and 40 million by the end of March, officials said.

The vaccine’s trials brought some concerns when it was revealed that its 90 percent efficacy rate was demonstrated in a group consisting of people younger than 55. At the same time, in a group that included people older than 55, the reported efficacy rate was 62 percent.
