like many anons, i was on qanonresearch/end during deplatformating - after Sept 5 passed and there was no 8chan until Nov. 2.
Complaints about gerbil and endchan arose in /qresearch/ around April 2020, after gerbil and those who stayed at his board after replatforming began pushing for more and more territory in the dough and stealing bakes to make it stick.
some bakers started the convention of asking for a qbin upfront in May in order to address that problem. worked pretty well although not universally well liked - there are no perfect solutions to any problem.
The idea that "comms promoted gerbil" is a complete fantasy.
