WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senators Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, and Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, have released a supplement to their Sept. 23, 2020, report that revealed millions of dollars in questionable financial transactions between Hunter Biden and his associates and foreign individuals with ties to the Chinese Communist Party and Russian government.

The supplemental is based on new records that confirm the connections between the Biden family and the communist Chinese government, as well as the links between Hunter Biden’s business associates and the Russian government, and further support the Committees’ Sept. 23, 2020, report’s finding that such relationships created counterintelligence and extortion concerns.

Some of the additional findings from their investigation include millions of dollars sent from a Shanghai-based company with links to CEFC, which was effectively an extension of the communist Chinese government, to a close business associate of Hunter Biden.

HMM: Mark Zuckerberg calls for changes to Section 230.

For years, Facebook has been one of the primary defenders of Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, arguing that its erosion would curtail free expression online and make it harder for the social media giant to police misinformation, hate speech, calls to violence and more.

But now, Mark Zuckerberg says he thinks it’s time to change the law. “I believe Congress should update the law to make sure it’s working as intended,” Zuckerberg will say at a Senate hearing on Wednesday, according to prepared testimony obtained by Protocol on Tuesday. “We support the ideas around transparency and industry collaboration that are being discussed in some of the current bipartisan proposals, and I look forward to a meaningful dialogue about how we might update the law to deal with the problems we face today.”

Easy call: Whatever regulation Zuckerberg proposes or gets behind will have a “pull up the ladder behind him” effect against smaller competitors.

On Thursday,

November 17, 2016

we graciously welcomed back Amy Howe, Esq., reporter and former editor of SCOTUSblog.

Amy first discussed the impact of Justice Scalia’s death on the Court, and analyzed the prospects of the Court remaining intact versus potential retirements. Amy then turned to the interesting cases that are before the Court this term, ranging from a transgender student’s use of bathroom of choice, to several cases which have religious components that intersect with the separation of church and state. Amy also clued us into the inside baseball of the “courtesy fifth vote” traditionally used to stay a death penalty case so it can be decided on the merits, but recently used in a different, and perhaps strategic fashion. Amy was gracious enough to answer several questions at the conclusion of her presentation.

At the conclusion, the Chapter presented Amy a plaque to thank her, as this was her fifth consecutive year of presenting to us!

Thanks to Amy, our judiciary in attendance, and to the members of the bar who attended. We look forward to seeing everyone at our upcoming events.

On Wednesday, November 18th, for the fourth time, we were thrilled and honored to have Amy Howe, Esq., Editor of SCOTUSBlog as our speaker at our Hyatt Luncheon. Ms. Howe, always a fascinating guest, discussed many of the upcoming decisions of the Supreme Court, including pivotal cases on abortion, affirmative action, a variety of criminal cases, the contraception insurance coverage issue under the Affordable Care Act, and many others. Ms. Howe discussed the makeup of the Court, and how the next presidential election will likely influence the direction of the Court for years to come. Ms. Howe also fielded questions afterward, and in so doing, expressed her strong belief that video cameras streaming the oral arguments should be placed in the Court, yet recognized that the reality of this happening was miniscule.

We had a fantastic turnout from our judiciary and the members of the local bar. Thanks to everyone who attended, and thanks again to Ms. Howe!
