far more than 18% of the "dark side" of the moon is visible. more like 2/3rds. as it transitions from new to full, there are nights when the "dark side" is rather brightly lit by "earthshine," ie, sunlight reflected off the earth, illuminating the lunar night, and visible to us. with a backyard telescope, it is relatively easy to see the same features we normally see when the side that ALWAYS faces the earth is fully lit by the sun.

long story short, the inescapable conclusion is that the moon is an engineered structure, insofar as it's rotation is controlled so that it always presents the same face. that condition, if it occurred naturally, could NOT be maintained over millennia. but we have drawing of the moon dating back 5000 that show no discernible rotation.
