Origin of memes on imageboards are never straight forward, to those who weren't there they're often an elusive mystery obscured by more popular explanations from people who weren't there. It started from a picture of a Turkish cake product having a GET on /s4s/ circa 2013, at the time the popular expression for laughter on 4chan was lel or top lel, then it became kek or top kek. Did kek as an expression of laughter from world of warcraft and koreans typing kekeke in starcraft have anything to do with it? Maybe, but it's not the whole explanation. I was a pioneer in using kek on 4chan in 2013 and that's how I remember the sequence of events
