*) NWT by Jehovah's Witnesses (black cover). There were numerous undocumented changes in the gray cover version which render it untrustworthy. I speak as a former JW. While the changes might have actually improved the accuracy of the translation, the failure to document and justify each of them rendered the new version unreliable in my eyes.

Unless you know a JW with a spare copy, your best source is likely an auction site.

*) The current Catholic version (New Jerusalem?). Helpful to making the decision: "Truth in Translation," which discusses the translations showing the least dogma and bias in the actual translation.

Note that there will always be a certain amount of "tickling of the ear" going on and, in my opinion, you should trust NO translation explicitly – I make it my habit to read several translations simultaneously, noting the differences in tone between them. The two mentioned above will often have the ring of truth to them, even though they have VERY different perspectives.

I also have a copy from the Syriac Peshitta that I look to for added insight, although, since it has a single translator, I do not let it govern.
