{excerpts}:
It’s official: the 2020 election results in Massachusetts were certified and approved by the Governor’s Council Wednesday afternoon.
The council’s approval is the last step and a typically perfunctory one to finalize the state’s election results,
but it comes after a global public health crisis that has killed thousands and prompted states such as Massachusetts
to shift toward an expanded mail-in voting system.
“With this certification, the 2020 election is officially over,”Secretary of the [Commonwealth] William Galvinsaid in a statement.
“By all measures, this was the most challenging and the most successful election year we have had in Massachusetts.”
The council’s swift approval of the election results draw a stark contrast to other parts of the country where lawsuits have been filed,
and then often dismissed, to challenge votes giving former vice president Joe Biden an edge in the election against President Donald Trump.
Several Republican lawmakers around the country refused to recognize Biden as the president-elect, even Republican officials overseeing
the votes in questions said they saw little to no evidence of voter fraud in their states.
The state primary drew attention from voters and lawmakers across the state as local clerks rushed to accommodate the waves of vote-by-mail
applications from people who wished to stay home to avoid contracting COVID-19.
Voters reported missing ballots, ballots with the wrong party affiliation listed, missing yellow envelopes and other problems around the September election.
But lawmakers say overall the primary was successful, and the kinks were largely worked out before the next round of mail-in ballots were sent out
to voters in early October.
“Massachusetts voters should be proud that they participated in record numbers in every election this year, even in the face of the challenges presented by
the pandemic,” Galvin said. “Election officials around the state should be equally proud of their work incompletely revamping our election system
in the middle of a presidential election, in order to provide voters with safe voting options.”
The revamped election system isn’t permanent, however. The mail-in voting law passed earlier this year states only covers elections through December 31.
But there are already plans in the works to extend those options.
The Senate passed a provision in its fiscal 2021 budget to extend mail-in voting for local elections through June 30,
based on an amendment filed by Sen. Cynthia Creem. {<< DEMONratZ}
The Committee on Election Laws is reviewing a bill filed by Gov. Charlie Baker to let Newton use mail-in voting for a special committeethat’s supposed to
take place in early 2021, the State House News Service reported.
After the election, Galvin announced plans to form a working group of local election officials to figure out what worked and what didn’t work
when implementing an expanded mail-in voting system.
Galvin hasn’t named the members yet, but he said the working group’s recommendations will help him file a proposal to
make broad-based mail-in voting a permanent option in Massachusetts.
