>Stein just means stone, right?

It depends on how it's used. Geographically it refers to a high rocky outcrop. Fels is about the same meaning. It's a rocky ledge or cliff type of geographical feature.

Stuhl refers to a range of hills or uplands.

Hohenfels would be high rock and Neuschwanstein would be New Swan Rock, which tells you they are on rocky outcrops.

Landstuhl has a castle, but it's nestled in the hills more. Stuhl kind of refers to that kind of hill range.

Other factor could be that Neuschwanstein was built bu King Ludwig (Louie) who died under mysterious circumstances. Found drowned during a nightly walk in shallow water. Was there a mob boss arrested recently in Philly named Louie.

If there was a flight from Hohenfels due west to Ramstein/Landstuhl it would never fly past Neuschwanstein. That would be like a direct flight from Boston to Detroit that that claimed it took a picture of the Statue of Liberty.

Doesn't make sense.
