John the Immerser was the grandson of the last true High Priest of the Zadok line descended from Aaron. Baptizing / immersion was the anointing of the priest for taking on the function of God's work. When John baptized / immersed Jesus (Yeshua) he was transferring the office of High Priest from the true Zadok line to the Son of God who accepted the priesthood forever after the order of Melchizedek. Heb. ch. 8-10.
