Simple. cover the ground with cardboard. Cover IT with soil. Plant by cutting holes in the cardboard. Only the plants you want can make the connection between the soil and the light. In the course of a single season, the cardboard / newspaper will decompose, leaving the weeds dead.

The basic concept of planting this garden IS probably pretty stupid (too small to feed even a single person through a year), but the technique used is sound.
