European Union Pushes Member States to Develop Counter-Drone Weaponry

Recent conflicts in the Middle East and Caucasus have proven just how potent a threat unmanned aerial vehicles can be on the battlefield, prompting European nations and the United States to rush for technology to defend against them.

The European Defense Agency’s recent report on its member states’ military forces has found a major deficiency in counter-drone weapons.

The agency’s “Coordinated Annual Review on Defense,” which it passed to European Union members’ defense ministries last week, warns that “European capability approaches towards A2/AD [Anti Access/Area Denial] are clearly at a crossroads, whereby the capability is either developed in a collaborative manner or the capability will not be developed for European forces.”

Accordingly, the report “recommends developing a European capability to counter unmanned aerial systems (UAS) to improve force protection, as well as contributing to establish a European standard for Anti Access/Area Denial (A2/AD).”

While ongoing wars in Syria, Iraq, Yemen and Somalia have proven just how effective drones can be, the EU’s report also came just days after a ceasefire was reached by Azerbaijan and Armenia at the end of a seven-week conflict over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region, in which drones played an important role.

The United States has made a similar push, sparked by the failure of its Patriot missile systems to intercept a slew of kamikaze drones that attacked two Saudi oil facilities in September 2019. The Pentagon has aimed to develop as many as five counter-drone systems in 2020, including directed energy weapons, jammers that interfere with a drone’s communication with a ground controller, and short-range guns and missiles that can bring a drone down quickly. The US military has adopted a kamikaze drone of its own with the intent of using the machine to intercept other kamikaze drones.

Just last week, US soldiers stationed in Germany traveled to the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico to test the US Army’s Interim Maneuver Short-Range Air Defense (IM-SHORAD) system, based on its Stryker wheeled armored vehicle. The Pentagon plans to field 144 of the systems by 2023, with the first going to US forces in Germany.

In all, the EDA report recommended six course changes for EU member states on defense, including developing a joint main battle tank and coastal patrol ship, starting a unified European space defense program and participation by more countries in joint exercises.

The push comes amid pressure from the Trump administration for members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) to increase their defense budgets to at least 2% of their gross domestic product - a goal only one-third of its members, many of whom are also in the EU, have reached.

Republican Incumbent Mike Garcia Defeats Democrat Christy Smith in CA25 – 15th GOP Pick-Up

Republican incumbent Mike Garcia defeated Democrat Christy Smith in California’s 25th congressional district.

CA25 covers northern Los Angeles County and a part of eastern Ventura County in Southern California.

The congressional race finally came to an end Monday after weeks of counting ballots.

“My focus is on representing all constituents in CA-25,” Garcia said. “In the short term, this means pushing to get federal relief to those who are most impacted by COVID, individuals and small businesses. It’s been a tough election, but the fight has been worth it. I am looking forward to two more years. Thank you CA-25!”

Christy Smith conceded Monday evening.

“This is not the end result we fought for, but I am proud of the strong, grassroots campaign we ran,” Smith, D-Santa Clarita, said in a concession statement. “Over the last few weeks, our attorneys reviewed thousands of uncounted ballots and our campaign volunteers undertook an extraordinary effort to cure hundreds of votes throughout the district that may not have been counted. We exhausted every possible option, and did everything within our power to ensure that every voice in this election was heard. Nonetheless, we came up short.”

CNN: Leaked documents prove that 'China underreported COVID-19 numbers'

You don't say?

CNN reported Monday that a trove of leaked internal documents from China prove that the communist nation underreported COVID-19 numbers in the early stages of the outbreak.

The news confirms what U.S. officials have believed for months: that China did not tell the truth about the severity of the pandemic from the beginning.

What are the details?

In its exclusive report, CNN revealed details from 117 pages of documents verified by experts to have come from the Hubei Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention. The city of Wuhan, where the virus was first discovered, is the capital of Hubei province.

The documents show that on Feb. 10, there were more than 5,900 new cases of coronavirus in the province, but officials reported that there were only 3,911.

On Feb. 17, Chinese officials reported that there were 93 COVID-19 deaths, but the documents showed there were actually 196 — more than twice what the government disclosed.

For the date of March 7, the officials underreported both deaths and new cases. The leaked documents showed 115 new cases and 3,456 deaths, but officials reported that there were only 83 new cases and 2,986 deaths.

So, @CNN, has apparently discovered that China has been underreporting their coronavirus cases and deaths. Who cou… https://t.co/X8qvnUZMdv

Yanzhong Huang, a senior fellow for global health at the Council on Foreign Relations told CNN after reviewing the documents, "It was clear they did make mistakes — and not just mistakes that happen when you're dealing with a novel virus — also bureaucratic and politically-motivated errors in how they handled it." He added, "If you look at the local level, the picture is not as rosy as the government had claimed."

Andrew Mertha, director of the China Studies Program at John Hopkins University, said that the underreported numbers from February "appeared to be a deception, for unsurprising reasons," explaining, "China had an image to protect internationally, and lower-ranking officials had a clear incentive to under-report — or to show their superiors that they were underreporting — to outside eyes."

U.S. intelligence officials warned the White House months ago in a classified report that China was underreporting both its COVID-19 case numbers and deaths, according to an April 1 report from Bloomberg.

President Donald Trump said of China at the time, "Their numbers seem to be a little bit on the light side, and I'm being nice when I say that."

Vice President Mike Pence told CNN the same day:

The reality is that we could have been better off if China had been more forthcoming. What appears evident now is that long before the world learned in December that China was dealing with this, and maybe as much as a month earlier than that, that the outbreak was real in China.

Obama’s Inspector General: Joe Biden’s DHS Pick Improperly Secured EB-5 Visas for Wealthy Foreign Investors

Former Vice President Joe Biden’s pick to head the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) agency, Alejandro Mayorkas, improperly helped secure visas for wealthy foreign investors when he served as deputy secretary at the agency under former President Barack Obama, according to the DHS Inspector General (IG).

In 2015, Obama’s DHS IG John Roth concluded in an investigation that Mayorkas had in fact acted improperly when he intervened seemingly on behalf of wealthy foreign investors trying to secure EB-5 visas in three separate construction projects.

The EB-5 visa program allows wealthy foreign nationals to claim to invest at least $900,000 in United States development projects in order to receive green cards for themselves and their family with eventual pathways to American citizenship.

The foreign EB-5 investor’s only requirement is to claim to have created ten U.S. jobs and revitalize “distressed” areas. Those areas, though, are often in wealthy zip codes to build luxury shopping centers and condos for the wealthiest of Americans. The program effectively sells American citizenship to the highest foreign bidders.

As Breitbart News has reported, 10,000 foreign nationals and their families are allowed to enter the U.S. every year on the EB-5 visa. The overwhelming majority of EB-5 visas are rewarded to China’s elite — driving a migration of rich Chinese to cities across the country.

Mayorkas, while deputy secretary at DHS, was reported by multiple staffers at the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) agency for intervening in three specific EB-5 visa cases where foreign investors had been denied visas.

In each of the cases, Roth discovered that Mayorkas seemingly intervened on behalf of the foreign investors in order to appeal the decisions and secure them visas, as noted in the DHS IG report:

In one specific case detailed by Roth, Mayorkas intervened in an instance where foreign investors had been denied EB-5 visas by USCIS officials in a development project funding movies by Sony Pictures. More than 200 foreign investors sought EB-5 visas, claiming to invest in the movies, but USCIS officials did not see how the projects fit the program’s requirements.

Carter Page Says FBI Agent Used Fake Name During Interviews

Carter Page alleged in a lawsuit filed last week that an FBI counterintelligence agent used an alias during interviews with him in 2017.

A retired FBI official who has worked in undercover operations says that an agent using an alias in that situation would be highly unusual.

Page said in the lawsuit that Stephen Somma, a veteran counterintelligence agent, introduced himself as Steve Holt during their interviews.

An inspector general’s report criticized Somma’s actions during the FBI’s Crossfire Hurricane probe.

Former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page alleges that an FBI counterintelligence agent used an alias during multiple interviews with him in 2017, a tactic that one former FBI official describes as highly unusual.

Page leveled the allegation on Friday in a $75 million lawsuit against the FBI, Justice Department and multiple current and former FBI officials over what he says was “unlawful spying” against him as part of the FBI’s investigation of the Trump campaign.

According to Page, veteran FBI counterintelligence agent Stephen Somma introduced himself as Steve Holt during five interviews conducted as part of Crossfire Hurricane, the code name for the FBI probe.

The FBI at the time was investigating Page and three other Trump campaign advisers over possible links to Russia.

Page was the most heavily scrutinized of the four original targets of the probe. The FBI conducted electronic and physical surveillance of Page from October 2016 through September 2017.

The lawsuit extensively cites the findings of a Justice Department inspector general’s (IG) report which detailed 17 “significant” errors and omissions in the FBI’s applications for Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) warrants against Page.

The IG report was highly critical of “Case Agent 1,” who has since been identified as Somma. The report said Somma, who works out of the FBI’s New York field office, was “primarily responsible for some of the most significant errors and omissions in the FISA applications.”

The FBI declined to comment on Page’s lawsuit and his allegation that Somma used a false name.

The use of an alias by an FBI agent outside of an undercover operation is virtually unheard of, according to a retired 25-year FBI veteran who has worked on undercover operations.

“Never heard of an FBI agent going undercover as a different FBI agent,” James Gagliano told the DCNF.

“If I was in a supervisory capacity on that matter — I’d never have authorized it,” said Gagliano, who has worked as a supervisory special agent and as the senior team leader for the FBI’s SWAT team in the New York Field Office.

The IG’s office did not respond to a request for comment about whether Somma’s use of a possible alias came up during the watchdog’s investigation.

North Korea: Kim Jong Un Given Coronavirus Vaccine

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and “multiple other high-ranking officials within the Kim family and leadership network” have been vaccinated for Coronavirus “within the last two to three weeks” thanks to a vaccine candidate supplied by the Chinese government, according to two Japanese intelligence sources. Both officials spoke to 19FortyFive under the condition that their names not be identified.

The news comes on the heels of reports in Reuters that North Korea is suspected to have tried to hack into the computer networks of drugmaker AstraZeneca, part of what appears to be a wide-ranging campaign to secure any and all COVID-19 vaccine data it can through illegal cyberattacks.

North Korea’s COVID-19 Crisis Intensifies

While the leadership of North Korea may have found a way to try and protect themselves from the dangers of Coronavirus, many parts of the country are being impacted dramatically, compounding ongoing economic challenges brought on through international sanctions, decades-long food insecurity issues, and the landing of three typhoons several months ago.

With an antiquated and poorly resourced healthcare system that is in no shape to tackle a pandemic, North Korea has resorted to cutting itself off from the outside world since January when the so-called “hermit kingdom” sealed its borders in an attempt to keep out the virus. To this day, Pyongyang claims to not have any “confirmed” cases of COVID-19 in the country, although, has admitted to “suspected” cases.

Blinken, Flournoy's firm told clients how to score business deals with China

The firm's website offers what reads like private access to a dream team of intelligence and security insiders.

Two potential Biden administration Cabinet members have touted their ability in while in the private sector to help clients navigate U.S. government regulations while doing business with communist-led China.

Antony Blinken, who Democrat Joe Biden picked as his nominee for secretary of state, is cofounder and managing partner in a strategic advisory firm with Michele Flournoy, who is widely handicapped as the next secretary of defense.

The firm, WestExec Advisors, claims to offer high-end clients "unparalleled expertise" on various factors pertaining to international business deals.

The group's website offers what reads like private access to a dream team of intelligence and security insiders.

"We are an unrivaled, bipartisan team of senior national security leaders with the most recent experience and unmatched networks in defense, foreign policy, intelligence, economics, cybersecurity, data privacy, and strategic communications," the website states.

The company's summaries of successful work include projects that appear to help clients deal with Beijing while not drawing ire from U.S. national security authorities.

One client, identified only as a major U.S. manufacturing firm, sought help from WestExec when planning to do business in China.

The challenge, WestExec said, was as follows: "Continue to provide capability to and remain a trusted partner of the USG while pursuing commercial activities in China."

The Blinken-Flournoy group advised the client on a number of issues including "a communications strategy for engagements with U.S. national security officials, and offered a strategic assessment of U.S.-China relations with specific implications for the company’s business strategy."

Elsewhere, WestExec shepherded "a leading American pharmaceutical company, and a multi-billion dollar American technology company" that aspired to do business in China.

The challenge, according to WestExec, was to "develop a strategy for expanding market access in China while safeguarding against trade tensions between the U.S. and China; and develop and implement a market reentry and expansion strategy in east Asia."

In those cases, the Blinken-Flournoy group states, "WestExec analyzed the trajectory of the U.S.-China economic relationship and Chinese domestic and global healthcare priorities to inform a comprehensive strategy that aligned the firm’s comparative advantages with Chinese objectives."

In the process, WestExec said that it "identified U.S. and Chinese stakeholders to engage."
