Chinese Communist Party Swings Scythe at Elderly “Leek”, Highlighting Economic Decline

西班牙巴塞罗那喜悦农场 1 hour ago

The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) will develop the spending power of the elderly to cope with demographic changes and promote economic development, according to a report in Hong Kong’s South China Morning Post (SCMP) on Nov. 29, which was reprinted on Dec. 1.

The CCP wants to see more seniors contributing to its economy as the world’s most populous country prepares to deal with the effects of a rapidly aging population and shrinking workforce after decades of a one-child policy.

The CCP government said in November that it would introduce specific policies to promote consumption and the ability to use smart technology among the elderly, including providing training to help pensioners integrate with the digital economy. Of particular concern is Beijing’s desire for seniors to make better use of smart technologies in health care, recreational activities, and public services to help reduce overall government costs and improve efficiency.

Consumer-oriented technology companies in the PRC have been developing products for the elderly. A report released last year by the China National Committee on Aging estimated that the size of the elderly consumption market will reach 3.79 CNY trillion by 2020.

The Ministry of Civil Affairs of the CCP recently said in a report that in 2019, China’s elderly population aged 65 and older will account for 12.6% of the total population, and that the number of elderly people will reach 300 million during the 14th Five-Year Plan period.

From the “real estate economy,” to the “education economy,” to the “rural economy,” to the “health care economy,” and even to the “elderly economy,” the Chinese Communist Party’s economy is collapsing, and at the same time they are stepping up their efforts to wield the scythe of the “leek”.

Uber Officially Acquires Postmates in $2.65 Billion Purchase

Uber Technologies Inc. was recently granted approval by the US federal government for a merger with Postmates to occur amid the COVID-19 novel coronavirus pandemic, despite fierce pushback from several Democratic lawmakers.

Uber announced Tuesday morning that it would be "officially welcoming the Postmates team to Uber, and partnering to create an even stronger delivery marketplace to benefit consumers, delivery people, and — in particular — the hundreds of thousands of merchants who use our platforms to grow their businesses."

"This time has also brought much-needed clarity. For our teams, 2020 has brought clarity to the opportunity we have to be strong partners to the restaurants and merchants we serve. We can do even more to help them reach new customers, grow their businesses, and feed their own families," Uber said of the $2.65 billion deal initially announced over the summer.

The company also rolled out a "regional listening exercise" through which it seeks to develop "a better understanding of how we can best support our restaurant and merchant partners."

"Our goal is to put restaurants and merchants at the head of the table and create an open dialogue on products, policies, pricing and more," the initiative's registration website details.

While Uber claims it will take customer and merchant criticism into consideration, many have argued that the merger, particularly during the US economy's pandemic slump, may have a negative impact on consumers, employees and merchants.

i've worked for uber, postmates, doordash, caviar. all are scummy, but running multiple platforms is one of the few ways workers can maintain some control (and earn extra). this is important since we can get penalized or deactivated from platforms arbitrarily with zero recourse.

— wilfred chan (@wilfredchan) July 6, 2020

US Senators Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Patrick Leahy (D-VT), Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) and Cory Booker (D-NJ) previously penned a joint letter to the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) in May, arguing the merger of the food delivery services would "raise serious competition issues in many markets around the country."

The Democratic lawmakers also called on the US Department of Justice (DoJ) to “closely monitor this potential transaction and to initiate an investigation if the parties reach an agreement to merge.”

The FTC ultimately granted permission for the acquisition on November 9, and the DoJ moved to approve the deal after its antitrust division received additional information.

This Uber-Postmates deal is not the only merger to occur during the COVID-19 pandemic, as Dutch food delivery company Just Eat Takeaway announced in June that it would acquire US-based industry competitor Grubhub.

“Grubhub is the best food delivery company in the US and it is the only one which is culturally similar to Just Eat Takeaway.com," Just Eat detailed in a June 10 news release, shortly after a proposed deal between Uber and Grubhub fell through.

IBM Slides As Amazon "Lays Groundwork" For Own Quantum Computer

IBM stock is down following news that one of its top competitors in the quantum computing space, Amazon, is laying the groundwork for a quantum computer of its own.

According to Bloomberg, Amazon has been hiring for a Quantum Hardware Team within its Amazon WebServices Center for Quantum Computing, based on internal job postings on LinkedIn. Marc Runyan, a former engineer with NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, lists his title as senior quantum research scientist at Amazon and describes his role as “helping to design and build a quantum computer for Amazon Web Services.”

As Bloomberg adds, among Amazon’s recent hires are research scientists focusing on designing a new superconducting quantum device as well as device fabrication. Developing its own quantum computer would let Amazon more closely mirror the approach taken by its major cloud rivals. International Business Machines first made a quantum computer available to the public in 2016 and has rolled out regular upgrades.

Last year, Alphabet Inc.’s Google said it had built a computer that’s reached “quantum supremacy,” performing a computation in 200 seconds that would take the fastest supercomputers about 10,000 years. But with the rivalrous spirit that has characterized the race to build a quantum computer, IBM cast doubt on Google’s claim. In a blog post, it said that a simulation of Google’s task could be done in 2.5 days on a conventional computer with enough hard drive storage, not 10,000 years.

Last year Amazon announced the launch of the AWS Center for Quantum Computing, which aimed to bring together researchers from Amazon, the California Institute of Technology and other academic research institutions to develop new quantum computing technologies

4 years lost to amnesia? NYT economist claims Biden FIRST US PRESIDENT to face an opposition calling him ‘illegitimate’

Democrat Joe Biden would be the first US president deemed illegitimate by political opposition in years, economist Paul Krugman claims – never mind the many Democrats, including Krugman, who’ve actually described Trump as such.

The Nobel Prize-winner made the pants-on-fire claim in a Monday NY Times op-ed in which he urged presumed president-elect Biden to govern by executive order to preempt Republican “sabotage.” Incumbent president Donald Trump and the Republicans should be blamed for all the country’s problems as punishment for their insistence last month’s election was stolen, he argued.

Biden will “be the first modern US president trying to govern in the face of an opposition that refuses to accept his legitimacy,” Krugman wrote before further revising history: “No, Democrats never said Donald Trump was illegitimate, just that he was incompetent and dangerous.”

Unfortunately for the economist, many who read the piece recalled otherwise. Not only did senior Democrats begin delegitimizing Trump before he’d even been in office a month, they even used the exact terminology Krugman claimed they had never uttered. Democrat Rep. Jerry Nadler declared Trump’s election “illegitimate” before he was even inaugurated, echoing the words of his now-deceased House colleague John Lewis: “I don’t see this president-elect as a legitimate president.” The pair, along with scores of other House Democrats, boycotted Trump’s inauguration over his supposed “illegitimacy.”

Perhaps Krugman’s memory lapse could be written off as election fatigue or Covid-19 brain fog, had the Times columnist not proudly participated in this delegitimization himself, in columns that remain available on the outlet’s website for all to see. His January 2017 column didn’t just mention delegitimization offhandedly, either – the entire focus of the piece was praising Lewis’ inauguration boycott as “an act of patriotism” and agreeing with the congressman that Trump’s election was not legitimate.
