I take Niacin to help get my cholesterol numbers. There are a few things you need to know about taking this. There is a flushing effect with this. It will make your skin turn red and extremely itchy from about 30 minutes after you take it and can last for an hour or even two.
You can buy non-flushing niacin, but I don't because the flush effect is what helps lower cholesterol in the blood. Regular niacin is what's referenced in that tweet thread.
You should NOT start out with 500 mg. You'll regret it. I tell you this from first-hand experience. Find a bottle with 100-mg pills and work your way up to it. Take 100 mg per day, then twice a day then three times a day, then take two pills at a time. Your body will gradually get used to it, but you'll have to deal with the flush effect every time you increase the dose.
There are a few things you can do to lessen the effect a bit. Drink a lot of water beforehand and EAT a full meal (take niacin towards the end of the meal). It will help.
Also note that your blood pressure numbers will go up during the flushing effect. If you have high blood pressure, make sure you keep an eye on your numbers while taking this.
Other than that, I will say that this drug is CHEAP and it has definitely helped my cholesterol numbers. Win-win.
