A 80's teenager, bored by traditional high school subjects like biology but fascinated by computers, accidentally taps into the Pentagon's top-secret computer…the USA's NORAD system. He starts what he innocently believes is a computer game called "Global Thermonuclear War," but the "game" is real. The Pentagon's best minds cannot shut down or reprogram the supercomputer that is readying a missile attack against the USSR, and thereby unleash Armageddon. The teen and his girlfriend attempt to aid the helpless Pentagon and, in a frantic race against a ticking "doomsday clock," try to persuade the computer to end the "game."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fox_(code_word)

Fox is a brevity code used by NATO pilots to signal the simulated or actual release of an air-to-air munition or other combat function. Army aviation elements may use a different nomenclature, as the nature of helicopter-fired weapons is almost always air-to-surface. "Fox" is short for "foxtrot", the NATO phonetic designation for the letter "F", which is short for "fire". The radio call announcing that a weapon has been fired is intended to help avoid friendly fire, cueing other pilots to avoid maneuvering into the path of harm.

There are three variations of the Fox brevity word, with a number added to the end of Fox to describe the primary type of sensors the launched munition possesses (if applicable). In addition, a separate brevity word for gunfire exists and is grouped with the three Fox codes for convenience.

Fox one

Indicates launch of a semi-active radar-guided missile (such as the AIM-7 Sparrow).[1]

Fox two

Indicates launch of an infrared-guided missile (such as the AIM-9 Sidewinder).[1]

Fox three

Indicates launch of an active radar-guided missile (such as the AIM-120 AMRAAM and AIM-54 Phoenix).[1]

Splash

During WWII, most aerial combat happened over water. Guided air-to-air missiles weren't a thing yet. You had to shoot the other plane down with machine guns. Airplanes are light and fragile, but bullets are very small, so simply hitting a plane with a bullet didn't guarantee a kill. Even once a plane had been definitively hit, and was smoking and losing altitude, it still wasn't a kill until it splashed into the water. At that point, it was definitely out of he fight, and could be disregarded. Until the splash, that plane could still fight, albeit with very limited capabilities. It could also limp home to fight another day.

So pilots started calling out when they had “hit”, “smoked”, or “splashed” an enemy plane. It was instantly and universally understood, and required no further explanation. If you got lucky, and you hit a plane which instantly exploded and broke up in the air, it was much quicker to call out “splash” on the radio than to explain what happened otherwise. In the middle of a dogfight, quick is the name of the game, and in general, in military radio communications, you pass the message as quickly and clearly as possible so as not to tie-up the channel.

As it happens, air combat over water continued to be a trend for a very long time, by which time “hit”, “smoke”, and “splash” had come to be accepted brevity codes on the radio. When fighting over land, “splash” still works just fine, instead of having to explain “the enemy I hit crashed into the ground.”
