Minnesota’s election directors say private money fueled by donations from Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg helped them successfully execute an election threatened by safety concerns amid the coronavirus pandemic, an avalanche of early arriving ballots, and President Donald Trump’s repeated attempts to undermine the legitimacy of voting by mail.

The Chicago-based nonprofit Center for Tech and Civic Life delivered grants to election offices in more than 2,500 jurisdictions across the country — including 28 Minnesota cities and counties.

Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, gave $350 million to the group because they said they wanted a safe and secure election during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The grants to Minnesota’s cities and counties covered a wide range. Ramsey County bolstered its voter outreach and increased personnel with its $2.7 million grant. The city of Sauk Rapids received a modest $5,000 but used the money to purchase personal protective equipment for election workers. Dakota County received a $613,000 grant and bought a folder/stuffer, automated letter opener, a ballot scanner and two ballot-on-demand printers to help process absentee ballots.

The Center for Tech and Civic Life declined repeated interview requests to discuss the grants and how the money was used, but a statement on the nonprofit’s website said the money was designated for election security purposes.

Remarks made by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Friday sent shock waves through Washington, D.C., as speculation began that Democrats in the House would use the Committee on House Administration — and their majority — to seat Democrats who ran behind Republicans in the nation's two closest House races.

In Iowa's 2nd District, Republican Mariannette Miller-Meeks was certified as the winner over Democrat Rita Hart by six votes.

In New York's 22nd District, former Republican Rep. Claudia Tenney leads Democrat Rep. Anthony Brindisi by 12 votes and a state Supreme Court judge will rule on Monday whether there will be a recount.

A reporter asked the speaker at her Friday press conference whether she would try to avoid a situation akin to the 1985 controversy in dealing with the two closest races.

"The Administration [Committee] is committed," she replied. "It is my understanding Rita Hart … will be asking the House to take this up. Further information about the technicalities of that is not a political vote but a House Administration matter."

Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) officers have sparked outrage after officers were filmed striking protesters with batons during demonstrations outside Mayor Eric Garcetti's house.

Footage posted to social media, that captured the LAPD officers responding to the protests, has gone viral and prompted widespread outrage amongst lawmakers.

It came during the 13th consecutive day of demonstrations outside the mayor's residence, where people have been protesting in a bid to stop President-elect Joe Biden appointing him to any position in his administration.

One officer was filmed using a baton to strike several people, including one who had been helping up another who had fallen.

In a statement to several media outlets, the LAPD said that officers converged on protesters because one had sounded a bullhorn, which violated an L.A. municipal code against producing noise that carried more than 200 feet.
