Subterranean (SubT) Cave Circuit Virtual Competition
Sixteen teams will compete in the DARPA Subterranean (SubT) Challenge Cave Circuit Virtual Competition. At 2:00pm ET, viewers will be able to experience a webcast of the event that follows teams as they progress through a variety of virtual cave worlds in a quest to correctly identify and locate artifacts placed throughout and see who comes out on top. Expert commentary will be provided by DARPA program manager Dr. Timothy Chung, U.S. Army Research Laboratory engineer Angela Maio, and others.
The DARPA Subterranean (SubT) Challenge seeks to better equip warfighters and first responders to explore uncharted underground environments that are too dangerous, dark, or deep to risk human lives. In both Virtual and physical System Competitions, participants deploy autonomous systems to map, navigate, and search various subterranean domains. The Tunnel Circuit took place in August 2019 and the Urban Circuit in February 2020. The Final Event incorporating tunnels, urban underground, and cave settings is targeted for Fall 2021.
The SubT Challenge Systems and Virtual Competitions aim to create a community of multidisciplinary teams from wide-ranging fields to foster breakthrough technologies in autonomy, perception, networking, and mobility for underground environments.
