>Likely a contrived trauma-inducing fake event.
a lot of investigation followed this event. richard feynman (the smartest guy alive) was called in to head the inquiry, and the lead engineers at the space center led him by the nose to the truth, which was that the engineers at Morton-Thiokol, who built the solid fuel rocket boosters, repeatedly warned the big kahunas at Cape Canaveral that the O-rings would almost certainly fail at the ambient temperature of launch day, and urgently recommended the launch be delayed. but that launch, like MANY shuttle flights going back to the very first one, included a top secret mission for the CIA. so under pressure from the clowns, ronnie raygun overrode the engineers warnings and ordered the launch to take place on schedule. what that secret mission was, specifically, i do not know. at the official hearings that followed, the launch control kahunas side-stepped responsibility by saying, "we misinterpreted the engineers' warnings as merely something less than 100% confidence in the O-rings." the triumph of technobabble jargon over accountability.
