Donald Trump Suggests Using Defense Production Act for Coronavirus Vaccines

President Donald Trump said Tuesday he was prepared to enact the Defense Production Act to make sure that Americans had enough coronavirus vaccines.

The president made the remarks as he signed an executive order for American companies to prioritize the distribution of coronavirus vaccines to Americans first.

“If necessary, I told you, we will invoke the Defense Production Act,” Trump said. “But we don’t think it will be necessary. If it’s, it’s a very powerful act as you know.”

The White House hosted an event promoting the success of Operation Warp Speed at developing a coronavirus vaccine in record time.

“This is one of the greatest miracles in the history of modern-day medicine,” Trump said.

Prior to the event, the White House played a highlight video of prominent figures questioning whether a vaccine could get approved and distributed by the end of 2020.

Trump said that he expected that the Food and Drug Administration would authorize the emergency use of the Pfizer vaccine within days. Administration officials have promised to have doses shipped out within 24 hours.

The president urged governors to act quickly to distribute the vaccine, noting that it was their responsibility to care for their citizens.

“The ultimate decision rests with the governors of the various states,” Trump said. “And I hope the governors make wise decisions who will decide where the vaccines will go in their states.”

Tom Brady Got Million-Dollar PPP Loan For His Sportswear Company And A Yacht

While thousands of small businesses were shut out of the Paycheck Protection Program earlier this year, NFL quarterback Tom Brady's sports performance and nutrition company, TB12 Inc., received a loan from the federal government worth nearly one million dollars.

According to the Small Business Administration, TB12 was granted a $960,855 loan in April. The sportswear and supplement company qualified for the lifeline with a 2019 payroll between $1.68 and $4.8 million.

"TB12, INC. received a Paycheck Protection Loan of between 350,000 and 1M through Cambridge Savings Bank, which was approved in April, 2020.

Based on standard PPP eligibility rules, TB12, INC.'s total 2019 payroll expenses were between $1.68M and $4.8M in order to qualify for the PPP loan amount received. Unline most businesses, TB12, INC. did not report the number of jobs retained by their receipt of the Paycheck Protection Loan, so per-employee payrolls cannot be estimated," SBA's site read.

Brady is the second-highest-paid NFL player of all-time, raking in over $350 million during his career. He recently signed a two-year, $50 million contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Brady's wife, Gisele Bündchen, is reportedly worth $400 million.

NY Times Writer Posts Fake Picture of Loeffler Home, Gets 1400 Retweets, No Fact Check from Twitter

Charles Finch, a literary critic for establishment media outlets including the New York Times and the Washington Post, posted a fake image of a house, purporting it belonged to Georgia Senator Kelly Loeffler.

Finch, a novelist, shared an image of a luxury mansion to his Twitter account on December 6th, insisting he was “staring in total absorption at Kelly Loeffler’s house.” The $15 million property, however, does not actually belong to Loeffler but rather television host Steve Harvey.

The post, which, at the time of publishing, has been uploaded for less than 24 hours has received over 2,300 retweets and over 7,000 likes. Despite the viral spread of the post, Twitter has failed to place a fact-check label on the tweet containing misinformation.

While Loeffler’s Georgia property is similarly luxurious, she and her husband purchased their home for considerably less: $10.5 million.

Finch’s commentary has appeared in outlets such as the New York Times, Slate, Washington Post and has received awards from the National Book Critics Circle.

Among his New York Times commentary are pieces including “What Tweets and Emojis Did to the Novel” and “Murderous Husbands, Flapper-Era Gun Molls and Korean Assassins: The Best Winter Thrillers.” He’s also penned a host of literary reviews for the Washington Post.

Biden’s Latest Nominee Proves He Comes Not To Bring Peace, But A Sword To The Culture War

What sort of culture war calming is this? Well, it isn't any at all, and none should ever been expected by serious people. So why did anyone?

There’s a high-level, widespread, and persistent fantasy that a President Joe Biden will calm this country down.

High-level, in that liberal moderate writers like The Atlantic’s Yascha Mounk believe it, writing in a Nov. 7 column titled “America Won” that “Biden will assume it as a kindly grandfather who seems nostalgic for a calmer past.”

Widespread, in that suburban Republicans longing for the days of Paul Ryan and Mitt Romney repeatedly voiced hope the culture war would end and order would return to our streets if President Donald Trump would just leave the White House.

Persistent, because no matter how many hard-left personnel and policies Biden promotes and pursues over a term as president, the century-old political pipe dream of a “Return to Normalcy” will continue, propped up by the kind of media outlets and politicians who work to fashion President Barack Obama as a great American uniter.

Biden made just such a move to the hard left this week, naming California Attorney General Xavier Becerra as his intended secretary of Health and Human Services — the kind of position most Americans could not name before President Barack Obama nominated Secretary Kathleen Sibelius to lead the largest expansion of government power into private lives since the Great Society. It’s also the kind of position that today’s Democratic Party will use to close churches, shutter businesses, and separate families in the name of Science.

Far from playing the “kindly grandfather” of high-minded fairytales, Biden’s pick has worked hard to establish a 33-year record on abortion, where he stands for taxpayer-funded child dismemberment until the moment of birth. His disdain for the lives of the unborn extends so far as to oppose punishing those who injure a pregnant woman’s child while committing a crime, and he’s been rated 100 percent by abortion extremists.

After 24 years in Congress, he continued his war as attorney general of California, The Federalist’s Madeline Orr reports, charging the activist who exposed Planned Parenthood’s disgusting organ negotiations, vying to force pro-life volunteers to promote abortion, and even targeting the long-suffering Little Sisters of the Poor.

What sort of culture war calming is this? Well, it isn’t any at all, and none should ever been expected by serious people. So why did anyone?

Essentially, a failure to comprehend the culture, its sacred importance to the American working class especially, and the very real war being waged on both that culture and those who hold it dear. It’s the same failure that caused so many to think Trump started the culture war when he simply dove right in.

No, Trump didn’t start the culture wars. And if it wasn’t understood before, let it be now: Joe Biden will not end them.

Louisiana Joins Texas In Motion Against GA, MI, PA, & WI After SCOTUS Denies Trump Ally's Bid To Decertify Biden's PA Win

Update (1705ET):Louisiana just joined Texas in the SCOTUS Motion against Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin on the grounds that various changes to their voting rules or procedures - either through the courts or via executive actions - violated the Electors Clause of the Constitution because they did not go through the legislatures:

Attorney General Jeff Landry issued the following statement regarding the ongoing controversies over the 2020 federal election and the new motion put forward by the State of Texas before the U.S. Supreme Court:

“Millions of Louisiana citizens, and tens of millions of our fellow citizens in the country, have deep concerns regarding the conduct of the 2020 federal elections. Deeply rooted in these concerns is the fact that some states appear to have conducted their elections with a disregard to the U.S. Constitution. Furthermore, many Louisianans have become more frustrated as some in media and the political class try to sidestep legitimate issues for the sake of expediency.

Weeks ago, on behalf of the citizens of Louisiana, my office joined many other states in filing a legal brief with the United States Supreme Court urging the Justices to look into the conduct of the election in Pennsylvania where their state court ignored the U.S. Constitution in regard to the conduct of the election. The U.S. Constitution in Article 1, Section 4, states plainly:

“The Times, Places and Manner of holding Elections for Senators and Representatives, shall be prescribed in each State by the Legislature …”

The power for the conduct of federal elections is held by the State Legislatures in each state. In states like Pennsylvania, the judicial branch attempted to seize control of these duties and obligations and to set their own rules. These actions appear to be unconstitutional. If it is unconstitutional for Pennsylvania to take this action, it is similarly unconstitutional for other states to have done the same.

Only the U.S. Supreme Court can ultimately decide cases of real controversy among the states under our Constitution. That is why the Justices should hear and decide the case which we have joined representing the citizens of Louisiana.

Furthermore, the U.S. Supreme Court should consider the most recent Texas motion, which contains some of the same arguments.

Louisiana citizens are damaged if elections in other states were conducted outside the confines of the Constitution while we obeyed the rules.”

Prices Of Chinese Rare Earths Are Soaring

BMO Capital Markets says that a surge in the price of Chinese rare earth metals in November is a reflection of the geopolitical tensions between that country and the developed world. Commenting on the sudden price gains in a research note, BMO’s commodity analyst Colin Hamilton also said that as nations around the world consider self-sufficiency in rare earths and other critical minerals, while also enacting more trade restrictions and economic protectionism, the market “is set for long-lasting transformation over the coming years, one that we believe will likely lead to a gradual erosion of Chinese dominance in processing capacity.”

November saw the prices of all major Chinese-sourced rare earths spike, but especially those used in magnets. In particular, the research note mentioned neodymium, which is the most common rare earth used in making magnets, which rose by 27% since early in November, up over 50% year to date. Several other key rare earths also increased in value last month, including dysprosium (+17%), gadolinium (+9%) and terbium (+27%).

Another factor in the price surge is a new law that came into force in China on December 1, Hamilton noted. Known as the Export Control Law, it creates new regulations that give the government more control over such exports as technology and rare earths.

“Market participants are increasingly of the view that the introduction of the new law will lead to a restriction of rare earth-based exports from China to key partners including the U.S., on the pretext that it is safeguarding its national security,” Hamilton stated.

Though exports of Chinese rare earth metals have been decreasing in recent years, Hamilton’s report pointed out that rare earth-based magnet exports have actually been trending up because of increased global demand, including by the U.S. In anticipation of concerns that the Chinese government could use the new law to further curtail exports, “key customers in the U.S. (or perhaps the State Reserve) have seemingly been buying up as much material as possible, with U.S. rare earth magnet imports reaching 480 tonnes in September, the highest monthly total since 2016.”

Already there have been measures introduced by nations at the policy level to address China’s dominance and bolster their domestic production of rare earths. In Africa, the European Union, Australia and the Americas, concerns about China’s control of the market has been pushing exploration and development projects, and leading to greater attention from political leaders.

“In May 2019 U.S. senators introduced legislation aimed at encouraging the development of domestic rare earth supplies, while the U.S. Department of Defense asked for additional federal funds to bolster domestic production of rare earths,” Hamilton noted.

In April of this year, the Pentagon awarded funding to Australian miner Lynas Corp. (ASX: LYC) and Nevada-based MP Materials (NYSE: MP) for rare earth separation facilities in Texas and California, respectively. And by late September, U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order declaring a national emergency in the mining industry. This followed recommendations outlined by the U.S. Department of Commerce to establish partnerships with such allies as Canada and Australia in order to secure greater access to rare earths and other critical minerals.

Meanwhile in Canada, in August 2020 the government of Saskatchewan committed C$31 million for the construction of the country’s first rare earth processing facility, which is planned to be operational by the end of 2022.

With ongoing funding for new projects coming from governments, Hamilton said he expects this will provide even “further impetus to ex-China capacity build-out over the coming years.”

Neal Katyal for Attorney General: Child Slavery Advocates Deserve a Voice in Washington

If defending problematic corporations becomes anathema, there will be no one left to staff Democratic administrations

President-elect Joe Biden should nominate Neal Katyal for U.S. attorney general—not because he's the most qualified candidate, but because of the dangerous precedent failing to nominate him would set.

Katyal is a #Resistance hero who, among other things, led the legal challenge to President Trump's controversial travel ban and was an outspoken critic of Trump's decision to continue the Obama-era policy of separating migrant children from their families at the southern border. He previously served as acting solicitor general under President Obama and represented al Qaeda terrorists imprisoned at Guantanamo Bay.

More recently, Katyal appeared before the Supreme Court to defend his corporate clients—Nestlé and Cargill—against accusations that they had abetted child slavery and torture. Slate reports that in the course of defending his clients, Katyal sided with the Trump administration and went even further by proposing "an extreme theory that would shield all corporations from lawsuits under a crucial federal law."

When it comes to defending corporate clients, which are accused of knowingly profiting from human rights abuses at cocoa plantations in the Ivory Coast, Katyal isn't afraid to go bold. For example, he went so far as to invoke the Holocaust, arguing that because the company that supplied the Zyklon B used in Nazi gas chambers was not indicted at Nuremberg, his corporate clients shouldn't be held liable for abetting the enslavement and torture of children.

It takes someone historic like @neal_katyal to stand in the shoes of the company that manufactured Zyklon B, this is why representation matters pic.twitter.com/hRMA1rvl9M

— David Dayen (@ddayen) December 1, 2020

Naturally, some radical liberals are outraged. That's precisely why Katyal should be the next attorney general. At the very least, he deserves a high-ranking role in the Biden administration. What are the libs going to do, cry more?

Biden has already followed in Obama's footsteps by hiring a bunch of former lobbyists for controversial companies such as Eli Lilly, Facebook, and Fannie Mae. His nominee for secretary of state, Antony Blinken, cofounded a secretive consulting firm that boasted of helping American universities court investment from China. Neera Tanden, the president-elect's nominee to lead the Office of Management and Budget, is president of a liberal advocacy group funded by corporations such as Amazon, Facebook, and Bank of America.

Warnock Voter-Registration Group Received $482,000 in PPP Loans

Georgia Dem candidate has attacked opponent for putting 'political games' ahead of relief

While Georgia Democrat Raphael Warnock has slammed his Republican opponent for "playing political games" with COVID-19 relief, the voter-registration group he ran raked in $482,000 in coronavirus bailout money.

The New Georgia Project, a voter-registration nonprofit founded by Stacey Abrams and helmed by Warnock until earlier this year, took in the nearly half-million-dollar sum from the Paycheck Protection Program, new data show. The loan program was created to help small businesses struggling financially during the coronavirus pandemic.

Warnock has attacked his opponent, Republican incumbent Kelly Loeffler, over the distribution of the loans.

"Georgians are wondering when are they going to get some COVID-19 relief," Warnock said during a Sunday debate. "They're wondering who is going to put small businesses in front of the large corporate giants."

The Senate hopeful's website advocates for greater transparency in the program to make sure small businesses are not ignored "in favor of wealthy corporations that are politically well-connected."

Van Dairy Group, owner of Australia's largest dairy farm, sued in relation to milk price crash

The owner of Australia's largest dairy farm, situated in Tasmania's north-west, could be forced to pay $2.3 million to its previous owners after allegedly breaching the sale agreement.

The Tasmanian Land Company (TLC), which despite its name is owned by New Zealand's New Plymouth District Council, has taken the Van Dairy Group (VDG) to the Supreme Court over the sale of the Van Diemen's Land Company.

Chinese businessman Xianfeng Lu, owner of VDG (formerly Moon Lake Investments), controversially purchased the dairy business for $280m in 2016 after outbidding Australian competitors at the 11th hour.

The dairy business milks about 18,000 cows over 7,062 hectares and, at the time of purchase, employed 140 people.

The deal was approved subject to promises made by Mr Lu to invest heavily in the business and increase local employment.

It has since been dogged with claims of staff mutiny, the resignation of the entire board and animal welfare concerns.
