RICK Snyder, Duggan take ‘investment mission’ to China

Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan will join Gov. Rick Snyder on part of an eight-day trip to China aimed at attracting Chinese investment in Michigan.

Snyder left for the “investment mission” on Thursday and will return Nov. 19. It will be his sixth business trip to China.

The mission is led by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, which will lead 11 Michigan companies to China in hopes of increasing exports from Michigan to China.

“We have built strong relationships in China since our first mission in 2011,” Snyder said in a news release. “We are excited to continue telling the Michigan comeback story and making the case that there is no better place in North America for Chinese companies to expand and create jobs than in Michigan.”

The trip is also a chance to tell the Chinese about Pure Michigan tourism, the governor said.

This is the first trade mission to have both the governor and Duggan join “to make the case for investing in Michigan.”

“The economic and physical landscape of Detroit is being transformed, with auto suppliers opening new facilities in the city and the real estate market at an all-time high,” Snyder said.

Snyder will visit Shanghai, Hangzhou, Chongqing, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Beijing and Nanchang, making company visits and meeting with government leaders along the way. He’ll also visit Shanghai Auto City, which is an automotive production base on the outskirts of Shanghai.

In 2011, Snyder took his first mission to Asia. Since then, Michigan has received nearly $650 million in new business investment from China in different automotive companies. Among these investments are new manufacturing facility in Cadillac, Michigan from Zhongding, a subsidiary of Anhui Zhongding Sealing Parts, and new U.S. headquarters for CW Bearing, a subsidiary of Ningbo, China-based Cixing Group Co. Ltd., in Northville Township.

The governor or Lt. Gov. Brian Calley have also visited Japan, South Korea, Canada, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Brazil, Mexico, Israel, Chile, Colombia, Switzerland, Ireland and Great Britain on similar missions.
