Through a cyber attack, hackers have gained "unlawful access" to the vaccine documents of the Mainz-based company Biontech. The EU Medicines Agency and the company confirmed the attack.

In a cyber attack on the EU drug authority Ema, there has been "illegal access" to vaccine documents from Biontech. The Mainz-based company confirmed this in a statement. According to the statement, Biontech was informed of the attack by Ema on Wednesday. The documents for approval of the vaccine had been stored on a server of the authority.

In the statement, the company stated that neither Biontech's servers nor those of the US pharmaceutical company Pfizer had been directly attacked. It is also not known that data of study participants may have been accessed. Ema confirmed to the company that the attack would not affect the timing of the vaccine approval process.
