Republican Leaders Block Congressional Recognition of Biden Inauguration

McConnell, McCarthy and Blunt rejected recognizing Biden as president-elect by voting against a resolution offered by Hoyer that said the congressional committee was preparing for the inauguration of Biden and Harris. Blunt responds: “It is not the job of the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies to get ahead of the electoral process and decide who we are inaugurating. The JCCIC is facing the challenge of planning safe Inaugural Ceremonies during a global pandemic.”

Gen. Michael Flynn’s first speech to be at 'Stop the Steal’ rally

Gen. Michael Flynn knows how to give back. The Russia investigation figure just pardoned by President Trump will make his first speech since the case against him ended. In fact, he will speak twice at Saturday rallies in Washington aimed at bolstering the president’s challenge to voting in several states. His first address will be outside the Supreme Court at a “One Nation Under God” rally hosted by Women for Trump. He and his family will then address a “Jericho March/Stop the Steal National Prayer Rally” on Washington’s Mall that is being titled, “Let the Church ROAR.” Saturday is slated to host several pro-Trump events. In addition to the Jericho March events at the Supreme Court, Mall, Capitol, and Justice Department, the March for Trump bus tour is ending with a rally downtown. There will also be several “ROAR” prayer rallies around the country, part of a national religious effort to support the president’s challenges to the election results and calls for recounts. The group said in a statement:

“ROAR! Prayer Rallies will simultaneously be taking place at the contested state capitals of Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin at noon on December 12th, followed by Jericho Marches around their capitol buildings. Additionally, Jericho Marches will be taking place at noon at all of the state capitals.” It added, “Since November 5th, Jericho Marchers have been fasting, praying, and marching daily around their state capitals for election integrity. The Jericho March is biblically-focused on Joshua 6. Jericho was a city of false gods and corruption. Just as Joshua was instructed to march around the walls of Jericho seven times, Jericho Marchers will pray, fast, and march until darkness is exposed and the walls of corruption crumble.” The March for Trump group said in its statement, "On Saturday, November 14th, hundreds of thousands of American voters traveled to the nation’s capitol and said ENOUGH! Outraged and infuriated by what Joe Biden himself called the 'most extensive and inclusive voter fraud organization in the history of American politics,' these American patriots stood in unity to demand that every legal and legitimate vote be counted."

NYC lawmakers sue to delay new ranked-choice voting system

Six city lawmakers are suing to block the Big Apple’s embattled Board of Elections from rolling out a new ranked-choice voting system next year, claiming officials have failed to prepare for the potentially confusing switchover. The lawsuit is the latest salvo lobbed by mainstays of the Brooklyn Democratic Party against the new elections system, which will do away with the runoff elections that Gotham’s political machines have dominated for decades. In the court papers filed late Tuesday, the half-dozen lawmakers and a slew of civil rights groups argue that BOE failed to provide a required report due in June showing it has prepared for the switchover and also failed to launch the required advertising campaign to educate voters about rank-choice voting. They also claim that the federal Voting Rights Act should be invoked to prevent the changes but do not outline how rank-choice voting violates the landmark civil rights-era law. The lawsuit was brought by Democratic Councilmen Adrienne Adams, Alicka Ampry-Samuel, Robert Cornegy, Laurie Cumbo, Farah Louis and Daneek Miller, who represent Brooklyn and Queens. Their lead lawyer is Frank Carone, the one-time law partner of recently departed Brooklyn Democratic Party chairman Frank Seddio and a behind-the-scenes power broker in Kings County politics.

One powerful civil rights group, the NAACP’s New York chapter, signaled Wednesday that it plans to join the lawsuit. “We didn’t understand the need for RCV,” longtime head Hazel Dukes told The Post. “We didn’t understand what it was all about. We’re also asking for a delay until voters get the education and the Board of Election is better prepared.” A Board of Elections spokeswoman said she could not comment on pending litigation. By a 3-to-1 margin, city voters overwhelmingly approved a charter amendment in 2019 that ordered the Board of Elections to switch to rank-choice voting for municipal elections by 2021. The switch was the result of a years-long push by good-government groups, which say it will improve governance and participation by ending low-turnout runoff elections where party-backed candidates dominate. Some civil rights activists supported the switch, too, arguing that rank-choice voting will bring more diversity to citywide offices, which remain dominated by white candidates in a city that is majority-minority. “It is not just a white progressive idea as experience in cities like Oakland, Berkeley and Minneapolis — where black candidates have successfully run with RCV and diversified their city councils — makes clear,” said Bertha Lewis, a longtime organizer in African American neighborhoods. However, several groups and politicians affiliated with the Democratic Party organizations in The Bronx, Queens and Brooklyn have mounted a fierce campaign in recent weeks to delay or nix the transition. During the six-hour long showdown, Cumbo, the Council’s majority leader, slammed officials from the Board of Elections and the Campaign Finance Board for failing to do enough to educate voters about the changes — and before arguing the money could be better spent on providing food during the coronavirus pandemic. “This is like the most political injustice ever,” exclaimed Cumbo. ” This is a political injustice to our population.”

New Yorker cartoonist arrested on child porn charges: cops

A cartoonist famous for his work in The New Yorker was arrested Wednesday on child pornography charges, state police said. Rhinebeck resident Danny Shanahan, 64, was charged with possession of a sexual performance by a child, cops said in a statement. The kiddie porn was allegedly found on his computer after Village of Rhinebeck Police obtained a warrant to search it, the Daily Voice reported. Police didn’t say what prompted the investigation or provide any details about the case. Shanahan — whose work most recently appeared in the magazine in February — was released and issued a ticket to appear in the Village of Rhinebeck Court on Jan. 20. Earlier this year, the famed illustrator’s son, Render Stetson-Shanahan, was sentenced to between five and 15 years in prison in the brutal 2016 stabbing death of his Queens roommate Carolyn Bush. Shanahan couldn’t be reached by phone or email on Wednesday night and didn’t immediately return a Facebook message seeking comment.
