A charming Los Angeles estate with an extensive wine cellar that was once the home of Estelle Getty, the late actress who starred in “The Golden Girls,” hit the market on Monday for $6.89 million.
Getty, famed for playing Sophia Petrillo in the beloved TV sitcom, owned the home for close to seven years after buying it through a trust in 1994, records with PropertyShark show.
She sold the five-bedroom house to its current owners—who could not be reached for comment—in 2001 for just under $1.5 million, records show.
“The owners, when they saw the house, fell in love with it for a number of reasons,” said Paul Lester of The Agency, who shares the listing with his colleague Aileen Comora.
“What they loved when they first saw it was the privacy and the large yard and pool—almost like a resort pool,” he said.
Located just above Sunset Boulevard, but on a gated lot set back from the street, “you can walk to all the restaurants on the Sunset Strip but you really feel removed from everything,” Mr. Lester said. It “feels almost like a private enclave.”
Built in 1948, the property spans 4,356 square feet and is fitted with features including French windows, hardwood floors, crown moldings and a wood-burning fireplace complete with an imported French marble mantle dating to the 1800s.
During their close to 20-year tenure, the owners made some changes to the property, including building a “dream kitchen” with Jerusalem limestone floors, Brazilian granite counters and a walk-in pantry. They also added a temperature-controlled, 1,700-bottle wine cellar, according to Mr. Lester.
The house checks all the boxes of the Covid-19 search, he said, referring to the changing preferences of home buyers who, as a result of the pandemic, are prioritizing new amenities.
There’s the privacy, the grounds, the gym and pool, the office suite and the private entrances, Mr. Lester said. It’s “rare to have it all in one package.”
Getty died in 2008 at the age of 84.
