Nationals MP George Christensen has joined the growing chorus of activists calling for President Trump to pardon WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange before he leaves the White House.

Assange is currently being held in London's Belmarsh prison, awaiting a decision on his extradition case to the US.

On Saturday, in an interview with Sky News Australia, Christensen told Sky News host Brent O'Halloran that Assange "has been a target of the Democrats, adding that "Hillary Clinton hates his guts, obviously, for exposing who the real Hillary was, and you've had a war on Assange by the Democrats and the deep state."

He told O'Halloran that president-elect Joe Biden has called Assange a criminal and a "hi-tech terrorist."

Christensen argues that a pardon for the WikiLeaks founder "is one way which he can stand up for free speech." He said it would irritate the Democratic establishment and would "poke the deep state in the eye."

Christensen concluded by calling the US "one of the greatest nations in the democratic world" and that "great document of democracy that is the United States Constitution is free speech and freedom of the press."

"So I'm hoping that he will pardon Julian Assange. It's the right thing to do."

In addition to Christensen, filmmaker Oliver Stone recently called for the president to pardon Assange and Edward Snowden without whom we wouldn't know about intrusive government surveillance programs, the US' aggressive drone strike program, or that Hillary Clinton's 2016 campaign manager.

Even longtime Assange friend and previously rumored ex-girlfriend Pamela Anderson has become creative in her direct appeals to Trump, tagging the president in a Twitter post featuring a stripped-down bikini photoshoot of herself holding a sign that reads "Bring Julian Assange home."

2020 Is Ending With 93% Of Global Economies Contracting… And With Markets At All Time Highs

As BofA's European credit strategist, Barnaby Martin, puts it in one of the final issues of his European Credit Strategist report for the year, "2020 is ending with one of the most predictable and potent themes of the last decade: central bank activism."

Case in point: on Thursday the ECB doubled down on more of the same as it delivered more PEPP, longer PEPP, further reinvestments and an extension of favourable TLTRO conditions. According to Martin, "while not as novel as some of the ECB meetings gone by, the aim of Thursday's package was to maintain "favorable" funding conditions across all markets (to ensure the swift return of business and consumer confidence)." For those who missed it, this is what the ECB did, to quote Martin:

Lagarde gave bond markets another dose of PEPP: a €500bn increase in the envelope and an extension of buying until March 2022. Thus, big QE will still be with markets for some time.

But as this week's PEPP disclosure shows, the programme is now almost exclusively about buying government debt (Chart 13). Instead, weekly APP has become more relevant for gauging the pulse of ECB corporate bond buying (Chart 14). Notice how the share of corporate bond buying has been rising here.

Although the euro spiked and markets appeared initially disappointed by the ECB's measures, by the end of the day "longer-end rates had rallied and IG credit spreads were broadly unchanged" Martin writes and adds that "what's clear is that financial repression lives on for another year…a bullish backdrop, which will continue to elicit a thirst for yield across debt markets, in our view."

Just in case it's not that "clear", the BofA strategist explains that the message from the ECB is that "the key message underlying everything was that favourable financing conditions must be preserved across all markets: banks, sovereigns and corporates." And as he further notes, what the ECB did "should be thought of as akin to Yield Curve Control for credit." Which also means that if corporate yields are under lock and key for 2021, "then credit vol likely will sink further next year, continuing to support the thirst for yield and compression trade in credit."

That said, while anyone who has dared step in front of hits liquidity firehose, which as we noted on Friday amounts to $1.3 billion in asset purchases every hour, has been absolutely crushed…

The Telegraph’s Twitter account left many scratching their heads on Saturday as it published a spree of unorthodox “breaking news,” including the “announcement” that Donald Trump had won reelection.

“BREAKING NEWS!: TRUMP WON!” The Telegraph’s breaking news account proclaimed late on Saturday.

Numerous other tweets were sent out, ranging from plain random to vulgar, that would quickly be deleted but were saved by some users enjoying the frenzy.

Just as the apparently compromised breaking news feed, the paper’s Telegram Football account also appeared to have been hacked.

Gang of ‘violent ultra-left’ activists charged with forming ‘terrorist group’ to wage guerrilla warfare in France – reports

French police have arrested a group of left-wing radicals who are suspected of making bombs and plotting to wage urban warfare, reports say. The leader has allegedly fought alongside the Kurds in Syria.

Seven people described as “ultra-left” were charged with forming a “terrorist criminal group” in order to carry out violent action, several French news outlets reported, citing official sources. Anti-terrorism prosecutors asked for pre-trial detention of six of the suspects who had appeared before a judge on Friday.

Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin later thanked police on social media for the operation against “these violent ultra-left activists,” without confirming any details.

Earlier reports said that a total of nine people were initially arrested on Tuesday in Vitry-sur-Seine, outside Paris, the southern city of Toulouse and a commune called Cubjac. Two of them were later released without prosecution. Le Parisien newspaper said that arrests also took place in Rennes, in the northeast.

The suspects are six men and a woman, all in their early thirties.

According to BFM TV, the group’s alleged leader had spent 10 months fighting for the Kurdish-led forces in northeastern Syria before returning to France in January 2018. The suspect was described as an “anarchist” who espoused “an ideology advocating for a revolution” and planned “guerrilla activities” in France.

Police reportedly seized a truck belonging to one of the suspects, where they found components used for making bombs, including dangerous chemicals and steel balls that were to be used as shrapnel. A sawn-off shotgun, a handgun, a knife and ammo were seized, and some reports said that hunting rifles were found as well. Police also recovered protective gear, including a helmet and a riot shield.

Texas Prison Gang Leader Who Received Commuted Sentence from Obama Charged Again, Say Feds

Local, state, and federal law enforcement officials teamed up to arrest a San Antonio man who previously received a sentencing commutation from then-President Barack Obama. The man, and seven others, now face federal drug trafficking charges.

This week, the U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Texas announced an eight-count federal indictment against a 41-year-old Texas Syndicate lieutenant, Hilario Nieto (aka “Shorty”), and seven other men. The eight alleged conspirators are charged with one count of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute methamphetamine and heroin, federal officials said in a written statement.

Alleged conspirator Danny Rivas, a 41-year old Texas Syndicate lieutenant from San Antonio, is also facing two counts of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine.

Prosecutors also charged 31-year-old Daniel Castaneda and 40-year-old Melissa Molina, both from San Antonio, with one count of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine.

Texas Mafia member Martin Reynosa, 56, and Maria Rivas, 58, are charged with five counts of possession with intent to distribute heroin.

The alleged conspiracy began in June 2019 in San Antonio, prosecutors stated. The group is said to have conspired to sell methamphetamine and heroin in the San Antonio area. Through the execution of search warrants, police seized methamphetamine, heroin, and two firearms.

Prosecutors said a federal court sentenced Nieto to 248 months in prison in 2004 on drug charges. In 2016, prior to his scheduled release in 2021, then-President Obama commuted his sentence. The commutation became effective in August 2018. Less than one year later, Nieto allegedly returned to drug trafficking.

“It is truly appalling that a man whose sentence the President previously commuted chose to flout that generous gift after being released from federal prison and resume gang-related drug dealing in the San Antonio community,” said U.S. Attorney Sofer.

DEA Special Agent in Charge Whipple added, “Methamphetamine and heroin trafficking, along with the associated crimes, are particularly destructive to the quality of life in our communities. DEA will continue to work with our law enforcement partners to target and eliminate these criminal organizations and hold them accountable for the destruction they cause.”

If convicted on the methamphetamine-related charges, each defendant could be sentenced to between ten years and life in prison. Convictions on the heroin-related charges could bring a sentence of up to 20 years to life in federal prison.

Poverty is rising fast, but it’s part of a decades-long project which the lockdowns of 2020 will only accelerate

A new study highlights worrying levels of destitution in Britain, with the situation worsening. But it’s no accident: lockdowns and The Great Reset are the latest stage in an elite-friendly project shovelling wealth ever upwards.

Don’t say you weren’t warned. While ‘centrist’ neo-liberals and faux-progressives lauded turbo-globalisation in the nineties, one ‘insider’ Sir James ‘Jimmy’ Goldsmith – a billionaire financier who never indulged in groupthink – told us that it wouldn't end well.

In his books The Trap and The Response, Goldsmith predicted that GATT and global free trade would create unemployment and poverty in the industrialised world, while ravaging the third world. His thesis was that the ability of the world’s biggest companies to go anywhere in search of increased profits, and employ anyone from a greatly expanded world labour market –which had increased due to political changes by 4 billion, soon to rise to 6.5 billion – was bound to have a downwards impact on living standards.

And, of course, that’s exactly what's happened. A new study from the Joseph Rowntree Foundation found that around 2.4 million people experienced destitution in Britain in 2019, a 54 percent increase from 2017. The report cites “inadequate benefit levels and debt deductions” as the “key drivers” of destitution, but it’s important to see the bigger picture. We never had these poverty levels in the sixties and seventies, when we operated under a very different economic model.

What’s pushed millions into poverty – in Britain, and in many other countries too – is a shift from a majoritarian economic system to a minoritarian one.

This shift began in the late seventies and early eighties and accelerated greatly following the fall of communism and socialism in eastern Europe, which meant there was no competing system to the rule of money power.

The World Bank – which has promoted turbo-globalisation – claims that the number of people living under extreme poverty fell by around 25 percent between 1981 and 2005, but in fact, as the Professor of Political Economy Robert Hunter Wade has pointed out, if we exclude the special case of China, the number in extreme poverty has actually increased.

“Still more bad news is the sheer number of people living on the scarcely generous PPP $2.50 a day, almost 3 billion by 2010, more than 40% of the world’s population,” Hunter Wade continues in the essay Growth, Inequality and Poverty in Global Political Economy. He distinguishes between the first two waves of globalization, in the late 19th century and the 20th century post-war decades up to around 1980, and the waves of globalization which followed.

The first two waves constituted relatively benign ‘trade globalisation’ with ‘immobile production.’ These waves, taken in tandem with government policies which favoured the majority of people, helped to reduce inequalities and poverty. In fact, by the mid-1970s inequality had fallen to historically low levels.

Azerbaijan Resumed Offensive Operations In Nagorno-Karabakh. Russian-Turkish Monitoring Center To Be located In Agdam

UPDATE: According to pro-Armenian sources, Khtsaberd and Khin Taher were already captured by Azerbaijan. Baku accused the Armenians of the escalation.

President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev already promised to crush the Armenians with “an iron fist” in the event of the further escalation:

“I was informed that yesterday some terrorist acts were committed either by Armenian militants or by the remnants of the so-called “Armenian army”. Of course, this causes concern. I think that Armenia should not try to start over. Two days ago, at the military parade dedicated to our victory, I said that if the Armenian fascism rises again, we will crush it with an iron fist.”

Meanwhile, the Azerbaijani side revealed that the joint Turkish-Russian center to monitor the ceasefire will be located in Agdam District.

On December 12, forces of Azerbaijan resumed offensive operations in the contested Nagorno-Karabakh region, where the Armenians and Baku reached a ceasefire just a month ago.

According to the Armenian Defense Ministry, Azerbaijani forces have been advancing on the villages of Khtsaberd and Khin Taher. These villages, located south of the Lachin corridor, remained in the hands of the Armenians following the transfer of several districts to Baku as a part of the ceasefire deal.

This became the first ceasefire violation since November 10, when it entered force. The Russian Defense Ministry confirmed the incident in an official statement.

It seems that the new escalation is a result of actions of Armenian forces that just refused to withdraw from these two villages in violation of the agreement with Azerbaijan. The aforementioned villages were located in a de-facto enticement by Azerbaijani forces.
