He insisted upon keeping together the union at all cost. He said he would have done his best to preserve it regardless of whether or not "slavery" was abandoned (in this case, they were speaking about working on farms for little wage; not just blacks, either).
The war actually started because the South had a much bigger export market - they were knee deep in agriculture everywhere you looked. The North wanted in on it and tried to tax them for it. Naturally, the South said to fuck off.
