The guy who got arrested for child porn at the Sunspot solar observatory in NM, Joshua Lee Cope is the grandson of Arl Cope who worked for NASA tracking satalites and also owned a cable TV business in New Mexico.

After graduating from Alamogordo High School, Arl spent four years in the Navy aboard the carrier Midway. He and Marilyn lived in Madagascar and England where Arl tracked satellites for NASA. After working telemetry jobs at Holloman Air Force Base. He bought Tularosa Cable Television and built other cable systems in New Mexico which he sold and continued to work in the Cable Industry, retiring as chief executive officer of Bufford Satellite Systems. After selling Quiznos in Jacksonville, Fla., he retired for good.

Arl is survived by his wife of 51 years Marilyn Cope; children, Arl Lee Cope III (Frances) of La Luz, Avery Cope of Phoenix, Ariz., Arletta Bledsoe (Greg) of Leesburg, Va., and Walter Cope (Virginia) of Cabot, Ark.; siblings, Carol Murdock of Wasilla, Ark., Howard Cope (Cheryl) of Wylie, Texas, Dee Cope of Alamagordo. He is also survived by sister-in-law and brother-in-law Geri and David Herrera of Tucson, Ariz., eleven grandchildren; Joshua, Anesia, Briana, Janae, and Avery Cope Jr., Taylor, Zoe , Sophie , Declan, and Molly Bledsoe, Lindsey Jones (Nathaniel), one great-grandchild Kali Cope, with another on the way, Clementine Jones and a host of nieces and nephews.

I found this interesting too. The guy in charge knew about it for months before he told anyone.

The search warrant filed in federal court in Las Cruces said the facility’s chief observer, who was not identified, told FBI agent he found a laptop computer with child pornography several months earlier but did not immediately report the discovery to authorities because he was “distracted” by an unspecified urgent issue at the observatory. I need to find his name.
