Papers Sue DeSantis for Failing to Release Virus ReportsTwo Florida newspapers are suing Gov. Ron DeSantis’ administration for failing to make public a weekly report about coronavirus conditions in the Sunshine State put together by the White House Coronavirus Task Force.

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Two Florida newspapers are suing Gov. Ron DeSantis' administration for failing to make public a weekly report about coronavirus conditions in the Sunshine State put together by the White House Coronavirus Task Force.

The lawsuit filed by the Orlando Sentinel and its sister publication, the South Florida Sun Sentinel, said the DeSantis administration is violating the Public Records Act by refusing to release the reports, which provide recommendations and snapshots of virus conditions state by state. The lawsuit filed last week in state court in Tallahassee seeks the immediate release of requested and future reports.

“The state has given us no explanation as to why this crucial health information should be withheld,”said Julie Anderson, the editor in chief of the Orlando Sentinel and the South Florida Sun Sentinel. “We had no choice but to ask a court to intervene to uphold the public records law.”

A Dec. 6 report obtained by the Center for Public Integrity recommended greater efforts at stopping the disease in Florida including mask wearing at all times in public, increased physical distancing by limiting capacity or closing indoor spaces at restaurants or bars and limiting gatherings outside of immediate households.

The report urged leaders to begin warning about the risks of gathering during the December holiday season.

“Florida has seen stability in new cases, an increase in test positivity, and increasing hospitalizations and deaths, indicating unrelenting community spread and inadequate mitigation," the Dec. 6 report said.

DeSantis has ruled out further business restrictions or a mask mandate aimed at stopping the virus' spread.

“No one’s losing their job because of a government dictate. Nobody’s losing their livelihood or their business,” DeSantis said earlier this month at an elementary school in Kissimmee.

The White House Coronavirus Task Force is chaired by Vice President Mike Pence, and Dr. Deborah Birx serves as its response coordinator. The task force's reports are sent to governors across the U.S.

The White House has indicated these reports should be “widely” shared, including with the media, according to the newspapers' lawsuit.

Putin Said to Have Two Identical Offices: One in Moscow, the Other at the BeachThe supposed ruse has enabled him to spend time at a government residence on the Black Sea without risking a potential political backlash, a Russian news site reported.

MOSCOW — Political commentators saw signs of infighting among the elite. An opposition leader chalked it up to the Kremlin’s habit of lying. But for many who have been working from home for months, the report from a Russian news site just made perfect sense.

The investigative news outlet, Proekt, reported last week that President Vladimir V. Putin has built two identically appointed offices for video linkups, one at a government residence outside Moscow and the second on the warmed-up shores of the Black Sea, a traditional vacation area.

The sight of Mr. Putin sitting in a sparsely furnished office, with a couple of beige armchairs, a Russian flag in the background, has become a familiar one on TV this year, as he has carried out official business tucked safely away from the coronavirus.

The confinement is atypical for Mr. Putin, usually a man of action during crises, showing up at floods or wildfires to console Russians and direct the responses.

Atlanta mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms says she declined a position in Biden's cabinetAtlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottom has declined an offer to serve in President-elect Joe Biden's cabinet, her office said in a statement Saturday.

"Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms was honored to have been offered a role in the Cabinet, which she respectfully declined," Rashad Taylor, Bottoms' senior adviser, said in a statement to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The spokesperson declined to state what the position was but refuted rumors that Lance Bottoms had been offered an ambassadorship.

"The Mayor's focus remains on the people of Atlanta and the great state of Georgia," he said. "Out of respect for the process, and the other candidates under consideration, no additional comment will be forthcoming on this matter at this time."

Barcelona concert tests use of same-day COVID-19 screeningBARCELONA, SPAIN — Eager for a live music show after months of social distancing, more than 1,000 Barcelona residents gathered Saturday to participate in a medical study to evaluate the effectiveness of same-day coronavirus screening to safely hold cultural events.

After passing an antigen screening, 500 of the volunteers were randomly selected to enjoy a free concert inside Barcelona’s Apolo Theater.

The other 500 who didn’t get selected were sent home. They will form a control group that will allow the organizers to analyze if there was any contagion inside the concert hall despite the screening with antigen tests, which while not as accurate as other types of tests, do produce results in 15 minutes as compared to several hours, or days, later.

Carolina Rius was one music lover willing to accept the risk of mingling among a large group of people indoors so she could finally experience a concert without having to remain seated and two meters apart as currently dictated by health authorities.

“This is not a party, this is a scientific study,” Dr. Boris Revollo, the virologist who designed the study’s protocols, told The Associated Press. He insisted that the use of same-day antigen screening for large events wasn’t a substitute for face masks and other sanitation rules, but he believed it could be a powerful tool to help make large events safe enough until vaccines are

widespread enough to beat back COVID-19.

POLITICO Playbook: It’s here!

SIREN … IT’S HAPPENING! – “Trucks with first COVID-19 vaccine in US get ready to roll,” by AP’s Matthew Perrone, Mike Stobbe and Mark Scolforo: “The first trucks carrying a COVID-19 vaccine for widespread use in the United States were set to pull out of a Michigan manufacturing plant Sunday, with the shots that are critical to stopping the nation’s coronavirus outbreak destined to reach states a day later.

“An assembly line of workers began in the early morning hours pulling doses out of a freezer, boxing the vaccine and loading the units onto pallets so they could be placed on trucks at a Pfizer plant in Michigan. Dry ice, shipping labels and packing tape were on hand as the workers — donning masks, face shields and gloves — put together the packages inside the warehouse.”

– “As coronavirus vaccine begins to roll out, FDA seeks to reassure the public on safety,” by WaPo’s Laurie McGinley

BUT, BUT, BUT … “Getting Covid Vaccines to People Will Cost States Billions They Don’t Have,” by WSJ’s Stephanie Armour and Scott Calvert: “State leaders say they are short billions of dollars in funding needed to successfully provide Covid-19 vaccinations to all Americans who want to be inoculated by health officials’ June goal.

“The federal government is providing the vaccine, along with syringes, needles, face masks and shields. But state leaders say they must hire medical workers, provide community outreach and education, set up vaccination clinics and ensure storage capacity for vaccines. Some states are also concerned about having enough supplies, such as gloves and gowns, to protect health-care workers as well as people getting vaccinated.

“Officials in several states said they would spend whatever is needed to get residents vaccinated. Some said that might force spending cuts in areas like education, unless Congress provides additional funding or the federal government reimburses a large chunk of their rollout costs.”

California issues cease-and-desist to San Diego strip clubsSAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Governor Gavin Newsom and the state Attorney General California officials served a cease-and-desist letter to two San Diego strip clubs operating amid the state's stay-at-home order.

The letter to the attorneys representing Pacers Showgirls and Cheetahs Gentleman's Club said the state has been informed the locations are operating indoors despite restrictions forcing restaurants to offer only take-out and delivery services under the order.

The letter was sent by state Attorney General Xavier Becerra on behalf of Governor Gavin Newsom and the Department of Public Health.

"We are informed and believe that MIDWAY AND F-12 are continuing to conduct indoor operations notwithstanding the Regional Stay at Home Order currently in effect in the County of San Diego. Such indoor operations violate the terms of the Regional Stay at Home Order, which permits restaurants, such as those run by MIDWAY AND F-12,to operate for take-out and delivery services only," the letter said.
